But what if it takes 400,000 Americans in Iraq, to put a damper on the killing? That will require a draft. I suspect that whatever subcommittees that are now forming to investigate the lead-up to the war will be strongly influenced by popular outrage occasioned by a draft to make heads roll in Washington, including some that occupy the White house.
But it seems to me that the only military solution is to forcibly put down the spiraling strife. Or to try to keep matters at the level they are- which is unacceptable, but it could be worse (it could always be worse).
It's unwise to put your army in the middle of somebody else's civil war. There is a British memo, on this topic, that clear;ly outlined the consequences of the invasion, so it is useless for those who planned it to plead ignorance.
