What makes you think that was the goal?
Can't the goal at this point be that we don't want to do to the people of Iraq what we did after Gulf War I?
Declare victory and go home happy and content to our relative safety? While others are not so fortunate?
I'm all in favor of turning it all over to the UN, if they'll receive it. But I'd feel mighty bad if we just left without leaving some structure in place.
Am I wrong in thinking that the place is majorly unstable at the moment? Without regard to the US even?
In retrospect, was going in a good choice? I can't see in what ways it was. There were no weapons of mass destruction (why on earth didn't he cooperate with the inspectors?). The average Iraqi citizen is less safe, not more. Justice to one man can't possibly be more important than the safety of so many.
In retrospect, all sorts of things are good or bad ideas. Who would have foreseen the fall of the Berlin wall?
At this point, retrospect doesn't matter nearly as much as prospect. What action, at this point, will lead to the best outcome for Iraqi civilians. We can't stuff the genie back into the bottle. What is best to do *now*?
Darned if I know. But in ten years, I'll have the benefit of retrospect.
