oh, the irony

I have written little about politics lately, ever since I realized that in fact the FDA was never so well funded and salubrious (the recall of 143 million pounds of beef this week has created a temporary scarcity here that has actually whetted my appetite for the real, FDA-approved bovine product, once the FDA's Acting Assistant Director clears some for my local supermarket).
But this story was too good. Last year Col. Morris Davis had written an extraordinary paean to Guanatanomo, "The Guantanomo I Know," in my local newspaper:

The story of Col. Davis has taken an extraordinary twist:

When Davis comments, "It is somewhat ironic," he isn't misstating (although he may well be understating!).

The Australian, Mamdou Habib, was rendered to Egypt and is currently taking legal action against the Australian Government.
Perhaps he was lucky to get out alive?

And then there are unlikely nations who may be able to help, maybe still, like Syria and Uzbekistan.

>He alleges, for example, that senior officials pushed for a plea bargain in March 2007 for Australian David Hicks, allowing him to serve a nine-month sentence in his native country for aiding the Taliban.

>Davis said the sentence was too lenient and was orchestrated to help Australian Prime Minister John Howard, who was under criticism domestically for his support of President Bush and U.S. policies.

Well, yes. This was apparent at the time.

Mr Howard, en route to the USA to receive the Irving Kristol award from the American Enterprise Institute, is currently in Nigeria.
I'm curious as to why he is there.
Something to do with energy perhaps?
Having a look around the Niger Delta?

No, he's not there to see democracy in the Niger Delta.

He had been planning to meet Robert Mugabe......

President Mugabe has stood up his Commonwealth colleagues at the very last minute. The Prime Minister, Mr Howard and Commonwealth Secretary-General Don McKinnon arrived in Nigeria expecting to meet with Mr Mugabe, but the elusive leader has changed his mind.

The Zimbabwean Government says Mr Mugabe didn't like the tone of a letter he received from Mr Howard. The letter of invitation was formal, polite and to the point, but President Mugabe found it offensive. His officials say it gave the impression that he was to be court martialled at the Commonwealth talks.

Mr Howard has dismissed President Mugabe's objections to the invitation to the talks. He says the letter was courteous.

Yes, but....

That was from 2002.

Mr Bush said that after his term of office was over it would be time to replenish the coffers.

Mr Howard is doing the same....

Bush is working on getting an immunity bill for the telecom industry passed, to ensure that his data mining project doesn't end up in court.
I am sure that the information gleaned from that operation is comparable in terms of profit potential to the discovery and exploitation of a natural resource.
It would be a shame for Bush to risk his personal fortune in class-action lawsuits. He should have pressed for immunity sooner than last summer, by which time the Democrats were getting irate emails from their constituents about their conciliatory attitude to the president and his plans for ensuring a comfortable retirement.
I almost admire Bush's use of wiretaps. It is nothing like Nixon's tapping of those on his enemy list. Bush rightly sees privacy as the New Frontier to be opened up. Ever since the Sumerians invented the damned seal, too many secrets have been kept.

>Speaking at a star-studded Awards for Excellence ceremony, run by Nigeria's leading newspaper, THISDAY, Mr Howard said that from his experience in power, Nigeria should seek more foreign investment.

>According to a report on THISDAY Online, Mr Howard also called for more investment on infrastructural development, which he said was essential to building a modern nation, and he stressed that Nigeria should not relent in continuing on the path of reform and fight against corruption and other vices.

>He said Nigeria was destined for success like some of the Asian countries today if it adopted good economic policies, the report said.

I wonder how this looks from the Niger Delta?

Only $40K a speech? I was quite shocked.
