My husband told me if I wanted to check his emails, there were some funny things a guy from work sent him. He was standing right here by me. I have seen some things this guy has sent and they're mildly funny, nothing obscene.
Then we opened one that my husband hadn't looked at. I don't know what it was or who it was, but some arabic writing came up on the screen, music started playing and the next thing you know, some man has his arm pulled off and is being dragged behind a jeep with his other arm while arabs run behind and cheer, waving their guns in the air. When the dragging stopped, someome raised a gun or sword towards the poor guy's head.
My husband is yelling at me to turn it off the whole time, but it was like I was so shocked I couldn't move. It finally clicked in my head that maybe this was one of the beheadings of an American. At that point I turned it off and deleted the email.
My husband practically ran from the room and turned on the tv. It's pretty really loud. I think he is just as upset as I am. I don't think he wanted to cry in front of me.
I'm so sick. The whole time you could hear the guy screaming behind the singing and cheers.
I don't give a rat's *ss what you're fighting for, what your political background is, who your god is, or what you've done. That's just f*cking WRONG.
And what about the camera man? Do you think his mother was proud? Does she show his work to her friends after dinner? How could anyone celebrate this?
And why would this idiot send this to my husband? I may just call him and get his sorry *ss out of bed to let him know how much I appreciated seeing this once I'm no longer hysterical. What a prick.
I have a 2 yr old grand-daughter with beautiful long blonde hair. She is so innocent. I can't even imagine how much more this world is going to be f*cked up by the time she's my age.

War is awful and lots of people die. In Iraq anything from 25,000 to 100,000 civilians, according to two estimates I've seen. I dunno where you live and I don't want to upset anyone, but US foreign policy looks different the further away from the centre (wherever that is in the US...Fox News, the Pentagon?) you are (Is that right?).
That's the viewpoint from here in the not quite outpost of the whatdoyoucallit? Imperium...nah, empire...not that either, sphere of influence, ally?? (Australia)
Politics has been distressing for a while now. I fear we're moving toward interesting times.

DeclanI definately agree with you Declan...I know your quite abit older than myself and alot of the others on here, you must have seen a fair amount of politicial history in the past (compared to myself!)
Its utter maddness...you know the police in this country don't carry guns. (they only have them for an armed response situation) Or if anywhere in London, like buckingham palace you might get an armed guard in that circumstance....but in general..they are un-armed.
However, did you hear about the policeman shooting the innocent 'victim' (suspected terrorist suicide bomber) 7 times in head...in broad daylight...in the middle london. Never before have we had anything like this..its scary stuff. Plains clothes police paroling, armed...and ordered shoot-to-kill. Its like a dirty harry movie or something.
Kind regards
Nick

Hmm.
I'm glad... I'm well away from it.I'm glad you're well away from it too :-)
I can't wait till I move away from this country to Australia then i'll be away from 'it' too...
One thing is though, the global scale of this terror..is the fact that it allows no-one to be truely safe from the bombs, deaths and damage caused. Albeit, some place are definately safer than others..
>When will the violence stop???
How longs a piece of string?..No, seriously thats a very good question. Its very hard to answer though.
There seems to be two groups of Muslims here in England. One group (the majority) are like that of any other religion...just following their faith so to speak.
But..then there are (here in England) a very dangerous group of individuals. Often appearing to be fairly young in age. Radical extremists. When you watch the news you can be horrified as to what these people say are the goals of their religion and war. "Muslims will rule the world"..."we will stop at nothing".. "the british government will pay".."Tony Blair is this, that etc. etc." The hatred is very real and dangerous indeed.
Funnily enough these same people..some of the recent bombers, have been quoted as "Bombers on Benefits"
Doesn't it seem strange that these extremists who hate the government so much and want them to "pay" are ironically funded by the very government they hate to live here in the first place. With housing benefit (they have a flat/house all paid for by us and the governemnt and also down to the very food they eat is funded by the people they hate. Not forgetting the british government having troops out in Iraq paid to protect 'us' from these very people - when in fact they are also paying these 'people' to live here in the first place!
Lastly, another worrying apsect are these bombers, aswell as being sometimes benefits type people - are also very well educated university people too...with chemistry degrees etc (hence the bomb making skills) Some of the resent ones have been exposed as being well educated, married with children. Their families knew nothing of what they were planning.
I fear (and I know this sounds depressing) but I think its a case of perhaps not when will this stop, but with the mess things are in in this country at least...its possibly just the beginning.
I know New Zealand may not be perfect - but in all honesty I truely believe its a far better country at present than the UK in many many respects...i'm really not proud to be british anymore, this place is going downhill bigtime :-(
On a more positive note lol I just have to remind myself that is why i'm moving to Australia :-)
Kind regards
Nick

In order to marginalise the extremist Islamic elements our leaders (excluding nice Helen Clark) have to demonstrate good faith, in a hundred and one areas, but first and foremost US foreign policy.
On the Iraq thing it is interesting to read about the creation of Iraq post WW1 and the parallels between the Iraqi respose to the British and the current thing. The errors of foreign policy make it harder for the moderate muslim elements in the middle east and in the west too.
The public face of decisionmaking about Iraq was so bereft of straight and honest talk. I suppose the real reasons were straightforward enough, I suspect something fairly dumb like 'we've got to do something'. How they compare themselves to WW2 leaders I dunno. Blair and Howard have been so evasive. And with Bush it feels like a Vietnam rerun in the denial of reality.I'll be onto the price of oil, the effects on the economy and climate change next. Time for a cup of tea.
DeclanWhat did I see written up on a wall in Canberra? 'These bad days will end'. Made my day.

Please don't judge the US by what you see on Fox news. It isn't exactly unbiased - and even they admit it.
They are told to present one side, by their owner, Murdoch (an Australian.)
Now, I will happily discuss the oil biz.

How did you judge that Declan was judging the US from Fox news from what you read in his post Aunt Mel?

Hope you enjoyed your cup of tea lol
For climate change...whats Australia's views on this with the Kyoto agreement?
The last heard with the US was that they were not interested with any agreements?..that was from the BBC

Well Yeah, Auntie Mel, one shouldn't. And actually my heart goes out to those Americans who must be in some sort of perpetual opposition to the current state of affairs. There's so many good things about US culture and people and stuff. The thing is as I don't live there what I see of the US is the mainstream entertainment industry and the foreign policy. Well I do like to read Harpers and the NY Review of Books, and there are good US movies, you come across them by accident, like Garden State, Coffee and Cigarettes, not to speak of US music which needs no praise from me.
The current situation feels so much like a departure from a US I admired and loved (except for its foreign policy, but even that was more justifiable, I mean Vietnam, cold war etc).
As for Rupert Murdoch I can't talk about him without being rude, offensive and possibly illegal.
All the best over there

From this:
"but US foreign policy looks different the further away from the centre (wherever that is in the US...Fox News, the Pentagon?) you are (Is that right?)."
Or at least the comment came from that. No worries, though. I didn't think anyone *really* took Fox as impartial.

I won't judge Australia by Murdoch....
<grin>
I did a trip to Perth once on business. I swore I'd retire there - It's pretty, and the folks there are like funny talking Texans. The weather isn't all that bad either, much what I'm used to, but with the calendar upside down.

I like 'debate' but I don't usually get riled.
So if you see something like that from me, it's usually good natured. For that matter, on the rare case it isn't, it'll be obvious.
Past time for me to go home.

>Well, it really bugs the living hell out of me that Fox takes swipes at Canada whenever they want to. The network is diret-lined to Bush and Co., so they are nothing more than a mouth piece for the right and the government in the U.S. I personally would even give a bit more kudos to CNN.
IMHO...

I once heard O'Reilly(sp?) call it the Republican network.
If you want to know the topic of the day, go to the GOP web site and see what the current "talking points" are.
This is the end of the thread.
