> My parents suggested I look into disability for my Bipolar I w/ psychotic features. I have extensive psychiatric records. What all is involved in the process? And what's the difference between SSI and normal disability? I've worked before, not a lot though. My parents have been gainfully employed forever.

> Should I just go ahead and get a lawyer to start the process?SSI is like federal welfare, SSD is for disabeled american workers. you need to have worked 40 quarters, 10 years, for SSD. if you work any part of the quarter it counts. If you want to know if you will be approved for SSI or SSD, go to Bender and Bender, they only take clients that will be approved for dissability. Your diagnosis sounds like you would be approved, a lot depends on the doc that writes a report to social sercurity for you. It takes months to years but when approved you get a retroactive check from you application date, I got 20 grand when I was approved. If you use bender and bender they get that retroactive money or a percentage of it. If you have lots of hospitaizations with that diagnosis you should be approved with out Bender and Bender. SSD comes with medicare health insurance SSI doesn't I pritty sure. On SSD you can work and earn up to 900$ a month and recieve benifits but SSI is different, not sure what you can earn before you loose benifits.
