Disability info?

My parents suggested I look into disability for my Bipolar I w/ psychotic features. I have extensive psychiatric records. What all is involved in the process? And what's the difference between SSI and normal disability? I've worked before, not a lot though. My parents have been gainfully employed forever.
Should I just go ahead and get a lawyer to start the process?
