sigi, where do you hang your clothes? In the US, clothes are (or should be in my case) in a closet. Coats and hanging stuff. Maybe in the bedroom. Other room have closets (if one is fortunate) for brooms, vacuum cleaners, whatever. Linen closets.
What do you call them?
Cup + board = cupboards in the kitchen. It's an older word often replaced by cabinet. I pronounce it cubboard, too.
Then there is a cubby at school or a cubbyhole where you can put a small amount of personal belongings, lunch, coat, boots, but I don't know the origins.
Armoire (sp), well I never knew anyone growing up that had one, but I've read about them. Pottery Barn and other decorator sources suggest every house should have one. My son has one. His room has no closets, and ours is from a garage sale.
