One of the best things about living in the USA is that everyone works 38-40 hours, which is considered full-time employment, and that we get all major holidays off. Isn't it dandy?

The unfortunate truth is that most salaried employees feel pressure to work far beyond their full-time requirements. Capitalism. dog eat dog. You wanna be promoted, you show the bosses that you are committed. (any wonder why we're all so grumpy over here?). One of my friends works for a british company branch in the US. She gets 5 weeks of paid vacation, which is virutually unheard of in the private sector.

I'm pretty sure that government employees (bus drivers have contrat with city government here) get to enjoy more regular holidays and are paid for overtime work. This is not always the case, but it would be nice.

I don't think many universities will cancel classes on columbus day. At anyrate, i don't have classes this semester, so for me, any day of the week starts with me taking a walk or catchng a ride to a cafe or library, doing some work on my computer until I get sick of myslf. then I go to my office. maybe I have a meeting, or I go see a lecture or do a reception for fancy dissertation fellows or eat lunch with a buddy, or something. Then I go back home when I'm "done" whatever that means. This is the first year when I have only a stipend and no strings attached- i.e. I dont have to teach a seminar, I don't have to produce a new paper every semester, my advisor is not paying me to work on her data analyses and I'm not doing any clinical or laboratory work at the hospitals, so? I'm my own boss for better or worse.

I have a lot of patience for the bus drivers. I alwasy tell them good morning when they pick me up, and thank you when they drop me off. I lose my cool during inclement weather, but yesterday was quite lovely.

I'm sorry we didn't get to hang out. I'm increasing my seroquel dose by 25 mg every day, and the adjustment is pretty soporific... *yawn*

any holidays in your neck of the woods? What is a typical day like in Alex's life?
