I tend to think of it not so much in terms of an antagonistic fight (though it sometimes can be), but more as a reminder of the ongoing work needed on both sides to build a strong relationship. I think you're right on target. Even when it might look like an antagonistic fight, it's not really because the desired end for both people is the strengthening and deepening of the relationship. The enemy is the obstacles, not each other.
