Whatever else you want to say about McNamara, he did have the decency to feel a lot of guilt and regret about what they had done.

And, I believe, Lyndon Johnson decided not to run for reelection primarily because he was so affected by the outpouring of dissent and the failure of his policy (ie the war).

Unfortunately, the war went on for a number of years after that.
