Getting close to finding a job!!!!

Posted by stargazer2 on February 6, 2008, at 14:38:06

I had an interview last week and this week was a followup one. They like me but my references are not great since I have left the last few jobs early with a medical leave so I am not comfortable using references that I knew from there, plus I really didn't make great contacts due to my state of mind at the time. So that is my greatest fear, not having glowing references which can really make a job a reality.

They said they will know by the end of this week.... Anyone that can send positive vibes my way, I will forever be in your debt.

This means alot to me after almost 2 years of recovering from my own hell.

Thanks for any positive thoughts you can give me and I'll certainly return the favor to you,as these kinds of situations are so uncertain as to how a candidate gets chosen for a job, it really can be pure luck...or who you know is the best way to get in.

Hi Stargazer,

I'm sending you positive vibes. Feel them?

For me getting my current job was dumb luck. I interviewed in February 2007 and was turned down. The person they hired left abruptly due to personal reasons in mid-March. The person they hired to replace her got fired after a few weeks and so I finally got the job. I am certain they realize they should have hired me in the first place. It'll be one year on April 2.

Best of luck. Post how it goes. More vibes your way.

Thanks for your good vibes, they worked!!!!I got the offer today, one day before I thought I would hear about it and they offered me more money than I even asked for during the initial HR interview. I am so happy...going on 2 years home without working has been a needed reprieve but I knew I needed to work to feel good about myself. Disability money is welcomed when you really are in the throes of a bad spell, but i always felt badly about possibly not being able to work again. That is a real blow to one's ego and feeling of worth.

There were times when I thought I wasn't able to return to work, but I pulled through and God willing I will be able to hold it together enough to stay in a job. Obviously this is a fear of mind, but I feel ready to try again.

How long were you out of work and do you have depression or another diagnosis? How are you doing now. That's great you are appraoching your one year anniversary.
Kuddos to you too!

Phillipa, yes all of the things that go along with a really great, long awaited event. went out yesterday and bought some basic clothes which I hadn't done in years. I have to look the part, as I did on the interview. That really takes some effort but it felt good. Except that routine takes alot longer than my usual routine which takes about a minute or two.

So now, up by 6-6:30, may or may not work out with hubbie, coffee and on the road by 7:45 or so. Half hour commute, not too bad, all back roads, no maniacs running me down on the highway.

Environment is work casual and I'm told they have jeans days every Friday and then for alot of other days, they also may declare jeans day for some reason.

Thanks for your support Phillipa, it helped alot...

Stargazer

The best part of the job seems that the people are real, not big corporate types who are intimidating just to unnerve you in an interview.

Hi Stargazer,

Good for you! I'm happy to know my good vibes combined with your good vibes helped cinch the job.

My official DX is dysthmia w/recurring major depression. I've been more depressed the last few months, but not enough to have a work meltdown which has happened to me before. In 2004 I transferred to a job in the same company, but different department and had a complete mental meltdown. I had another one in 2006 when I got fired for no good reason after only five weeks. At least then I could collect unemployment which helped us out financially.

I'm lucky that I can wear jeans everyday so I didn't have to buy any new clothes. Though I could use some new jeans, but that has to wait until I lose some weight.

Let us know how it's going and congrats again on getting the job.

Poet, after they fired you in 2006 did you get another job? The work environment can be unpredictable in terms of stress, so it hard to predict the course of an job situation and every company has it's own style. I have had more difficulty in larger, more impersonal companies and this one is smaller and the people seem more genuine, perhaps since you could be working with everyone.

Thanks again for your support.

Hi Stargazer,

I was fired in November 2006 and got hired at my current job April 2007. I don't list the company that fired me on my resume for obvious reasons.

For the job I quit in 2004 I tell potential employers that it was grant funded and the grant ran out. Not a total lie, I was in a grant funded position, but transferred to hell job long before the grant might have ran out. In any case I am eligible for rehire if they call for employment verification.

I hope you like your new job and that they like you. The place that fired me after only five weeks never really liked me. Ditto with the department I transferred into and left after three months of hell. Current job they like me and if it only paid more I'd be set.

Job offer, now Drug Test and Background check

Posted by stargazer2 on February 15, 2008, at 12:33:00

In reply to Re: Getting close to finding a job!!!!/POET » stargazer2, posted by Poet on February 14, 2008, at 13:31:44

I'm getting nervous about my background check, not so much the drug test anymore since I have been told that Nardil will not show in my urine.

At one job I was at in 1995, I took a medical leave for about 8 weeks and then returned and worked another few years.

At another job in 2005, I took a medical leave to help my father with his PArkinson's and did not return. It was more for the harassment at the job that I felt the need to escape.

And then with my last job in 2006, I took another medical leave and didn't return since I was in a profound depression, which I believe was the result of some pretty chaotic work issues.

Does anyone know if any of these leaves, either personal or family, can be disclosed to my future employer or are they protected by law as private and not relevant to work performance.

Again, I am very nervous, since I got the job and now there will be more digging into any past work history and I'm not sure what can be divulged froma former employer.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed since so much went into getting this job offer and I guess it can be rescinded based on the results of the background check.

I hope The results come out clean but I'm definately worried, not sure whether to be or notsince I don't know what they can release from my file.

Does anyone know anything about this!????

Stargazer don't know if the laws have changed since I worked. But at the time the past employer could divuldge when you work and circumstances for no longer being there in a general way. I was a Director of Nursing for eight months at a nursing home and part of my job was checking credentials. Some former employers would say to me this is off the record but bla bla bla about the person. Hope this helps. You will be fine. Nothing bad in record right? Love Phillipa

Hi Stargazer2,

They might be looking more for criminal background than employment history. When I worked in investment/insurance department of a bank they were looking to make sure I had no criminal record. I had an obvious gap of 10 months of unemployment and it wasn't questioned. I had to do a drug test, too and was fingerprinted and my fingerprints were registered with the government. All that for a low paying boring job.

The last three large companies I worked for had policies that said they would only release employment information of start date, end date, job title and eligibilty for rehire. Hopefully the places you worked for have something similar in place. The companies I worked for did it that way to protect themselves against lawsuits from ex-employees. Even the job where I handed in my two weeks notice and came back the next day to find all my stuff packed in a box has me eligible for rehire. I did give notice, it wasn't my fault hell boss wanted me out of there quickly.

Definitely don't sweat the drug test, they are looking for illegal drugs, not prescription.

Good luck. Please post how it is going.

Poet so it is the same. That's great. But you had to be fingerprinted? I was when I worked part time for a jail results next day and then once applied as a nurse for a prison finger printed then too and was hired but decided I didn't want to be in the center out side of the prison. Felt unsafe for me. Love Phillipa

Are medical leaves included in background chk?

P and P...I guess the medical leaves are the specific issues I'm worried about since the dates I gave that I worked there, included that time right before I left the last 2 jobs.

I consider my self a good employee, but I don't kiss *ss which doesn't help with personal refs and I don't play games like so many who thrive in jobs. I'm almost invisible because I avoid the politicalness and just focus on doing a good job, which seems less important in my last 3 jobs. The job responsibilities take up all my working hours and I find so many others skimp on the work and focus on the gossip and politicalness more than the actual work and I always feel different that I am slighted or feel insignificant for doing this.

I have heard you can get a copy of your former work records to read what has been said about you, is this true and do they send everything or just the items that they are comfortable with you reading? Such game playing in jobs.

Waiting now to hear if there is anything negative in my reocrds, I have no way of knowing. I don't think I have ever had a background check done before. An agency in California does the check, its really big business from their website. They can find out alot about you.

I won't be able to relax until it comes back clean...please let it be and make my fears go away. If it doesn't I may not try for another job again, i have had such up and downs...if I get this job I will have to keep it since the process makes you never want to look again, I don't ever remember a job search being this involved...the intrnet has complicated it alot in terms of information collected about you.

Hi Stargazer,

You wrote: I have heard you can get a copy of your former work records to read what has been said about you, is this true and do they send everything or just the items that they are comfortable with you reading?

It might vary by state. I'm in Wisconsin and per State Statute 103.13(2) "every employer shall, upon the request of an employee, which the employer may require the employee to make in writing, permit the employee to inspect any personnel documents which are used or which have been used in determining that employees qualifications for employment, promotion, transfer, additional compensation, termination or other disciplinary action, and medical records."

In other words as a resident of Wisconsin I have the right to request to review all of my employment records/personnel documents and not just ones the former employer wants me to see.

Thank you for allowing me a use for my paralegal training. I'm a wiz at Wisconsin statutes. Now, if someone would hire me to be a paralegal...

I am sending positive vibes your way that your employment background check comes out clean. As I said in an earlier post they might be more concerend with criminal activity than gaps in employment or why you left a particular job.

Good luck, try to stay calm and more positive vibes coming your way.

I do tend to get caught up with the "what Ifs" especially with this situation since it has been so long in coming. I don't want things unrelated to my work performance to be out there, ready to sabatage my efforts to come back from a long hiatus from work. I'm ready to work now and don't want my fears to become reality.

Thanks for any poitive vibes you can send to me.
