Disability info?

Posted by Christ_empowered on August 1, 2011, at 12:53:52

My parents suggested I look into disability for my Bipolar I w/ psychotic features. I have extensive psychiatric records. What all is involved in the process? And what's the difference between SSI and normal disability? I've worked before, not a lot though. My parents have been gainfully employed forever.

Should I just go ahead and get a lawyer to start the process?

Yeah, get the process started. First look for the required paperwork.

Hi CE,

I'm guessing you've seen these but I'm posting the links just in case. I found information in there that I didn't know.

http://www.ssa.gov/pubs/10029.html and
http://www.ssa.gov/pubs/11000.html about SSI.

I don't know whether or not you really need a lawyer to start the process. I have heard that most people wind up needing one later on. However, if your parents are considering transferring any assets to you they definitely should talk to one first.

CE had disability til turned 65 this year and now I guess just social security same amount of money. The amount you get is based on the amount of money you have earned over the years. I was in the hospital with 6 months of short term disability and my pdoc said go on disability. Was so much easier then. As he filled out what ever paper work was involved and didn't need a lawyer was only interviewed over the telephone and got it and it kicked in when short term over. Can you get your doc to start the process for you? Phillipa

Hey, zonked posted a great post a month or two back. Can you find it in the archives?

Apparently the stress and hassle can be significant. Lawyers or counsels only take a percentage of a retro check only when their client wins.

It can take maybe three months even if the client needn't contest denial.

I haven't gone this route myself. I do know trying to talk to the IRS once made me snap. It was a crazy, bureaucratic maze, that organization.

SSI is like federal welfare, SSD is for disabeled american workers. you need to have worked 40 quarters, 10 years, for SSD. if you work any part of the quarter it counts. If you want to know if you will be approved for SSI or SSD, go to Bender and Bender, they only take clients that will be approved for dissability. Your diagnosis sounds like you would be approved, a lot depends on the doc that writes a report to social sercurity for you. It takes months to years but when approved you get a retroactive check from you application date, I got 20 grand when I was approved. If you use bender and bender they get that retroactive money or a percentage of it. If you have lots of hospitaizations with that diagnosis you should be approved with out Bender and Bender. SSD comes with medicare health insurance SSI doesn't I pritty sure. On SSD you can work and earn up to 900$ a month and recieve benifits but SSI is different, not sure what you can earn before you loose benifits.

I always thought you needed 10 years of work too but according to this government web site you need less if you are younger. There is a table showing how many years for different ages.

Great link. But when turned 65 my Disability automatically became my Social Security Payment with Medicaire. But always paid even on Disability for the Medicaire for Part A think it was. Phillipa
