It might be quiet today - Columbus Day (US) and Thanksgiving (Canada).
Though I just plain old slept in :-)

:-(
i had to go play at psychcentral
:-(
dammit.

i found this website a while ago...
it was some psychotherapist from somewhere in the states...
he worked in a clinic somewhere (i'm fairly hopeless sigh)
he had a message board.
there were only a couple posts to it and he was responding to them...
i thought i'd post a link to it at some point if people were getting too pissed with bob i thought maybe we could go play over there...
this guy looked like he could use some company lol.
he had a blog too...
but he had funny political beliefs which put me off rather...

can't remember how / where i found him...

and now he is lost again.

sigh.

WAKE UP!!!!!

i guess you guys are all stuffed with turkey or whatever.

oh well i've had one glass of wine so i'm feeling a bit better now

:-)

One of the best things about living in the USA is that everyone works 38-40 hours, which is considered full-time employment, and that we get all major holidays off. Isn't it dandy?

The unfortunate truth is that most salaried employees feel pressure to work far beyond their full-time requirements. Capitalism. dog eat dog. You wanna be promoted, you show the bosses that you are committed. (any wonder why we're all so grumpy over here?). One of my friends works for a british company branch in the US. She gets 5 weeks of paid vacation, which is virutually unheard of in the private sector.

I'm pretty sure that government employees (bus drivers have contrat with city government here) get to enjoy more regular holidays and are paid for overtime work. This is not always the case, but it would be nice.

I don't think many universities will cancel classes on columbus day. At anyrate, i don't have classes this semester, so for me, any day of the week starts with me taking a walk or catchng a ride to a cafe or library, doing some work on my computer until I get sick of myslf. then I go to my office. maybe I have a meeting, or I go see a lecture or do a reception for fancy dissertation fellows or eat lunch with a buddy, or something. Then I go back home when I'm "done" whatever that means. This is the first year when I have only a stipend and no strings attached- i.e. I dont have to teach a seminar, I don't have to produce a new paper every semester, my advisor is not paying me to work on her data analyses and I'm not doing any clinical or laboratory work at the hospitals, so? I'm my own boss for better or worse.

I have a lot of patience for the bus drivers. I alwasy tell them good morning when they pick me up, and thank you when they drop me off. I lose my cool during inclement weather, but yesterday was quite lovely.

I'm sorry we didn't get to hang out. I'm increasing my seroquel dose by 25 mg every day, and the adjustment is pretty soporific... *yawn*

lol. yeah, in nz we have a little something called 'labour day' in celebration of... precisely that (minus the 'living in the USA' part)

;-)

> I don't think many universities will cancel classes on columbus day.

Oh. They don't have public holiday's off?

> At anyrate, i don't have classes this semester, so for me, any day of the week starts with me taking a walk or catchng a ride to a cafe or library, doing some work on my computer until I get sick of myslf. then I go to my office. maybe I have a meeting, or I go see a lecture or do a reception for fancy dissertation fellows or eat lunch with a buddy, or something. lol. yeah, i try to make work in time for morning tea at 10.30. that goes for 1/2 an hour to 1 hour... then check emails and stuff then lunch at 12.30. then afternoon tea at 3.30 and seminars on tuesdays and thursdays and reading groups distributed through the week at regular times... i've been a bit slack with reading groups. i'm still trying to find my vibe for work. i've never been one to work at work. unless i have a deadline and i go in in the evening when everyone else isn't there. but... i need to get into it. i've got deadlines for seminars and papers between now and the end of the year. i was going to work at home today but i started surfing... and winding myself up... and surfing... then drinking... then posting... sigh. tomorrow tomorrow... missed a seminar today. poorly done :-( but on the upside: no teaching no tutoring no working just MY stuff. why can't i get into it? i'm supposedly passionate about it. you know... since i've discovered babble... i think i've found something of a virtual life. before i had a virtual life philosophy WAS my life. now it is... hard. hard to get into it. that is really very bad. really very...

> I'm sorry we didn't get to hang out. I'm increasing my seroquel dose by 25 mg every day, and the adjustment is pretty soporific... *yawn*

yeah. seroquel worked great for me (well as great as a med is going to) for quite some time. i hope it works out for you.

not sure when our next official holiday is... i had one today. does that count?

Hey Alex- your working style sounds JUST like mine!

I try to start off each day with a little to-do list. so far my list has only gotten a few things crossed off. Went to T. Read the section of my Diss Proposal that outlines the data analysis I need to do on the data I just finished coding and entering (after 20 months). I'm trying to stay upbeat about it. ugh. Now I have a lab meeting from 2-4, a lecture to attend 4-5:30 (hope it's a fancy guest speaker so that they'll give us cookies or something). Finally- the main event: I am a dissertation fellow for this committee. I've never met this group of professors and scholars, (I know 2 or 3 of them). They are having a dinner to welcome me as will as the other diss. fellow and the handful of predoctoral fellows. Hmm. ordinarily, I might have a glass of wine to chill out. Now, I guess I'll just have to do some deep breathing. Hope dinner is not chicken. I'm sick of chicken. I want beef, or fish. I hope none of these committee members are Nobel Prize winners. It's entirely possible. Geez. Well, whatever. I've already cashed the check, so they're stuck with me.

so sometime after a dinner and a lot of awkward introductions, I will make my way home and proceed to get started on "work" after a quick e-mail check. Then after about 2.5 hours of responding to babble-posts, I will realize that it's bedtime and I haven't created my presentatiion for my meeting with diss. advisor that I postponed from last friday. barf-o-la.

n = 50. That's my mantra. I have naturalistic data from n = 50. That's a freakin' whopping accomplishment. Even if my advisor doesn't recognize it and gets impatient that I haven't analysed it all in full yet. well, she can just kiss my drugged patootie.

When is tea? I like this idea of "tea". Is it a meal? are there crumpets? What's a crumpet, anyway? I'm a tea snob, btw. I can converse in tea language, although lately my budget does not allow me to indulge in the more exotic varieties. just don't try to make me drink Pu-Erh, PLEASE. tastes like steeped decayed forest moss.

Perhaps I'll make me a cup of jasmine oolong to take to lab meeting. cya later. tater!
