Did you know that in order to honor our agreements with the Chinese and provide collateral for our burgeoning 2 trillion dollar debt to them as balance of trade (deferred) payments, the US was forced to make offers to avoid disaster? The administration turned over the mineral rights under National Parks in 4 western states; Idaho, Wyoming, Utah, and Colorado, as an offset to defer payments. Notice how the status of 192,000 acres of the 155 National Parks was just changed in the last couple of days?
So, it has begun. With our economy teetering on disaster, a depression like the 30s will return, brought on by collapse of the Saudi family and expansion of the war in Iraq to Iran, Syria, and Jordan. Banks will fail and the government will pull something like what Roosevelt pulled in 1933 by declaring weeks long “banking holidays". The US government was in default then. If we go into default in July or August 2005, next year, soon, by early 2006, the Chinese will be on our borders attempting to take possession of their mineral rights.
…and believe it or not, all this is followed by good news in 2008!!!

well happy new year.
I attended a talk on the state of our economy.
Yes we are in debt to other countries and yes this is what's going to happen.
this talk was given before the election and he had some things to say about the election as well.
Which I can't repeat for fear of being blocked. it's not a pretty picture.
we are heading towards being 50% in debt and when that happens, well, your dire prediction may come true.
it's funny I have always been afraid of starving and being homeless.
A few of us are just a paycheck away from the street now.
I had nightmares all night about my future.
lately I have been afraid.loosing what's under our parks...mineral rights.
USA business have done that to so many other countries, I guess now it's our turn.
Humble pie don't taste so nice.

Please send information. Being in the oil biz, this could affect my "position in society" a great deal.

I'm skeptical of this claim. I googled "mineral rights national parks china" and came up with nothing relevant.

Hang in there... Tomorrow I will get my hands on that article about the government offering up the National Parks in four western states to ease tension over two trillion ($2,000,000,000,000) dollar imbalance of trade payments to China.
I'll transcribe the article and the address to get to it. The Administration reclassifying the National Parks status to "highest and best use", from the status of protected, happened last Tuesday. I read it on the Yahoo.com news... We can all go there to read that one again. What that means is the ground work has been undertaken which allows the government to do whatever they want with the parks 192,000 acres.
Please be patient. I'll get more info in the next couple of days. OhByTheWay, I would have responded sooner but Babble was broken yesterday when I tried to respond... Not complaining since DrBob does a great job of keeping things working...
Rod
PS: DrBob is a superman, since I can't even seem to get dr10day.com up and running at all yet.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Minerals is currently leading the emerging "mineral rights" movement. Members plan to gather Tuesday morning outside of Harry Winston's in Beverly Hills to protest the cutting and sale of gems by jewelers. A PETM spokesperson said their focus for 2005 would be, "Faceted stones are fake!"
In other news, "the government [is] offering up the National Parks in four western states to ease tension over [a] two trillion dollar ($2,000,000,000,000) imbalance of trade payments to China."
Asked how he felt about it, China's minister of foreign trade said, "Well, since we provided most of the labor for mineral extraction in the western United States in the 19th and early 20th centuries, it's about time we gained the rights to whatever's left."

Hi Rod,
I intended the above as a joke -- I made it up ("April First"). I'm sorry if my attempt at humor proved lame.
I was just trying to inject a bit of levity into these serious times....

Dear Rod,
According to this recent article on MSNBC (published December 14, 2004), the *entire* US trade deficit is currently $55.5 billion, only $16.8 billion of which is with China:
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/6711385/
That's less than one percent of the $2 trillion claimed in your post below. Also, despite extensive searches, I've found nothing to suggest that the US has sold any public mineral rights to China.
I think someone (besides me) may be pulling your leg.
Best wishes,
Mark H.

I work in the oil biz and haven't heard of anything like this. If it were true, I would think I would have heard it. Hopefully it is just a nasty rumor.
But (the nit-picking) you mention a 55 billion deficit. Rod mentions a 3 trillion debt. Debt and deficit aren't the same thing.
Sorry - I'm a frustrated linguist.

Hi Auntie,
Of course you're right. I was focusing on this comment in Rod's second post: "two trillion ($2,000,000,000,000) dollar imbalance of trade payments to China" which I took to be a reference to a trade deficit, not a debt.
This may be a terribly naive question, but does the US government owe *any* money to China? If so, why?
(Can you tell it has been almost 30 years since I took a class in macro-economics? Not that I understood it then.)
Please educate me. I'm always glad to learn something new.
Best wishes,
Mark H.

I'm glad you found that. I assumed that we owed anyone that has money invested in us (tbills, stocks, bonds, etc.) but this has a better summary of this particular bit.
I'm still curious to know if the bit about the parks is true..... Rod?
Back in the '86 oil bust, the local economy took a powerful hit. Home foreclosures were common - my house dropped 50% or more in value. Jobs were rare as hens' teeth. Hubby and I were unemployed at the same time. Scary times, indeed.
As I said before, hundreds of thousands of jobs were lost in the industry, never to be replaced. <aside: if that happened in any other industry (auto, steel, etc) there would be rioting in the streets. but it was the oil biz, so there was cheering instead> Only months later were we considered "displaced workers" and allowed to get a few more months of our measly unemployment.
Folks here are a resiliant bunch, though, and stronger for the experience. Those of us that survived still run our personal finance as if we were in a depression - spending less than we earn and trying to stay debt free.
Heck - maybe we even have a future as consultants if/when it happens in the rest of the country. I hope the doomsayers (not including you in this buch, Rod) are wrong, but with the economy the way it's going I'm afraid they aren't.
Jeez, I miss Clinton.

Exempli Gratia: We have a $51 Trillion annual obligation of which $7 Trillion is going begging as a deficit. MarkH is toooo right! Is the $2 Tillion the obligation and the $55 Billion being the actual deficit? Probably, now that I have taken the time to study the info.
Rod (I misspoke!)
PS: Hmmmmmm.......! Sure wish my friend could find that printout on his desk! I then could go to XYZ website and get more info...

Did anyone ever find anything substantiating this comment? If it's true, it would have to be documented in some budget line item, or other .gov document. What year was this supposed to have happened?
This is the end of the thread.
