Phillipa - I dare you to go on all the boards and hand count all the different posting names showing up during the last 90 days. Exclude the posting names that are currently blocked. Then come back to your thread here and post how many names you counted and then try to convince the rest of us that there is no one around here to post anymore.

That's not my job. Seems Bob keeps a good count of posts on each board hence closing some. How bout counting new threads? More accurate to me. Phillipa off to facebook and ebay work

> That's not my job.
hmmm... I'm not so sure. If I am going to make an absolute statement (i.e. that the site has died and that because there are a handful of posters blocked.. there is no one left to post anymore), then believe me, I would consider it my job to make sure that what I was saying was accurate - BEFORE I posted the absolute statement.
So I do think it's each person's job to validate their claims before they make them. If everyone takes responsibility for that, some of the rukus would diminish.
> Seems Bob keeps a good count of posts on each board hence closing some. How bout counting new threads? More accurate to me.
But you didn't say anything about threads. You pronounced the site as 'dead' - based on your assertion that there is no one left here to post. So Phillipa - I challenge you to see if that is true, and then let us know what you find.
I realize my challenging your 'Time of Death' announcement might kind of make you feel put on the spot here.. but I genuinely believe that we are all accountable for the claims we make. The pronouncement you made left me feeling that my active existence here was invisible. And I don't think I am invisible. So maybe what I'm asking you to look at is all the activity on the boards, and acknowledge whether you see us.

I'm still here, too. I think those who aren't blocked and those who've chosen to stay around - even if it's only to post from time to time - make Babble just as alive as anyone.
No certain subset of posters can cause a community to be utterly "dead" or utterly "alive." It - and all types of communities - are's a bit more complex than that.
I see it as just another season. They come and go but the environment lives on...

Just how many people are blocked? A couple of weeks ago I actually checked and it was only about a half dozen. What is the number now that you describe as "so many"?

?? Did you mean this for me? If so, it`s confusing - because it doesn`t respond to what I said, and it doesn`t respond to who I am here. I haven`t left - or threatened to leave.

I'm still not sure how you arrived at your conclusion that it was dead? All you had to do to 'see that babble is not dead' is to look at all the boards and the collective activity. You made your initial post that babble had died within hours of Thursday night's chat - without having bothered to step into the chat to see if it's alive? Curious thing there. Bunch of folks were there when I was there - and I didn't even stay very long! Lots o' ways to check on the pulse of a place without making a hasty declaration of death. Next time you start wondering or worrying about it - I'd encourage you to test your theory that it's dead before deciding it IS dead and talking about it as if it's dead.

It isn't a question of who is blocked.
And it may not be terribly helpful to say so, but anyone who has been here as long as Phillipa can remember when Politics, Substance Use, Writing were all active and even Withdrawal, Eating, Self Esteem and Books were too, sometimes.
(It seems quaint to have a Self Esteem Board. I'd almost forgotten.)Around 2005, I guess I am thinking.

Everything passes, anyway. It's a lesson in impermanence. Many people had passed on from Babble by 2005. Any system of civility rules will end up having unintended consequences. It's no one's fault. The formula is ridiculous, but no one should feel put down by this gratuitous opinion.

I was just reading something about the neurobiology of Asperger's, and this thread reminded me of some of the concepts I had read about.
My guess is that Phillipa did not make an absolute statement in a literal sense. Much like when a person says "It's freezing in here!" - it is likely he is not implying that the temperature of the room is technically below the freezing point. Instead, he is using emotional cues in speech to communicate his feelings and perception of how cold he feels and also about how he feels about the cold - which communicates 2 concepts simultaneously.
Unlike Vulcans, humans don't always speak from the literal sense, but add emotional undertones to the symbolism of language to communicate one's feelings about something and to sort of transfer that feeling to another individual as an instinctual act related to seeking human connectedness.

Could be, Violette. You offer a very insightful perspective. So perhaps the comments 'it's died' and that 'there's no one left to post' were just relative... tho' they didn't sound relative at all.

As one who was a proponent of the Self Esteem board, the very notion that I would have put myself forward in an election amongst my peers here is enough to induce a panicked response. I'd rather spend my therapy dollars on something else.

Is it more panicked than the response to being a deputy?
I need to think about this :)

I do like the idea of ambivalent and subversive apologies.
In the same way, once could craft a speech thanking everyone who did not vote for you.
Think of all the things you could praise them for.

>I always felt secure in my role as deputy, because I thought that Bob backed up any action that I might take - and he was free to undo any action I took as well. The training was thorough, extensive, and insightful. I was in training to be a deputy for MONTHS before I was allowed to act on the boards. That made me feel safe in my role. Knowing that I had a team of fellow deputies to draw upon for difficult situations for consultation was invaluable.
The whole idea, though, of being elected for a similar volunteer position leaves me quaking my my sandals. That rejection thang, you know.> I need to think about this :)

I remember Books. :) I also seem to recall posters at least as far back as 2001 claiming that Babble was ruined because it wasn't the same place (or the same posters) that they had become attached to. And maybe they were right. But if they were, where does this leave the posters who came to value Babble in 2005? Or 2006? Or today?I used to assume that everyone else knew statements like "everyone is blocked" or, in this thread, "so many are blocked who's left to even post" as just emotional expressions rather than statements of fact. I don't make that assumption any more. And I think the distinction is important, especially on this board.
