Generalizations

Posted by Dinah on December 27, 2007, at 15:07:09

I have to confess that I am uncomfortable with the application of the generalizations rule in many situations.

It seems to me that generalizations are best addressed by other posters, not by administration. I see the job of administration as providing a civil environment for posters. I do not see generalizations as inherently uncivil. They may be mistaken, they may be correct, but unless they are about a group of people who may feel accused or put down, I don't see the administrative purpose of sanctioning them.

I don't see it as an administrative function to police thought or expression of ideas about medications or equipment. I do see it as an administrative function to try to ensure that posters expressing contrary opinions are not silenced or intimidated. But to me that is a separate issue.

Dinah,

i think it is extreme and cruel to block someone who depends on this site for support for simply giving her opinion. I work in a hopsital to and feel the same way as she does. But it it only a personal opinion.. A personal preference..Anyone else is also entitled to their opinions and preferences. It is the entitlement that gives respect to others . to not respect what is an opinion could certainly be called insensitive and not "civil"..This could just go way to far so I will leave now.. thks for speaking your mind Dinah. I feel it is only a matter of time before I get blocked too

"Please don't exaggerate or overgeneralize."

I had thought that the rule about generalizations referred to making sweeping statements about a group of people....not about a piece of medical equipment.

Are blood pressure cuffs reading Babble too? Do they feel put down?? Or are the manufacturers feeling put down?

It sounded to me like she expressed a personal opinion based on experience.

Can we not post experience about products?

This is a very wierd place!

My _opinion_ (and I have no evidence for this, it is just an opinion based on observation) is that the block in question was not done because of the "generalization" itself, but for other reasons.

Maybe someone decided that that person needed a short break from PB and found a post that had something in it to use as evidence of a civility infraction, even if it was a fairly minor one.

I confess to rarely understanding the warning/block system even after reading and re-reading the civility rules. I understand that Dr. Bob and the deputies need some latitude to make discretionary decisions and this seems to be one of them. I'm sure it's not an easy job.

I often feel scared to post because I'm never sure if what I say will be interpreted as uncivil. I'm working on it though. The warnings feel little stigmatizing, and I _do_ take them personally, even though the wording is well thought out "This doesn't mean I don't think you're a good person" or something to that effect.

Anyways, just my 2 cents.
