Dr. Bob, a question. . .

Posted by Sarah T. on October 21, 2005, at 22:15:22

Hi. I want to start a new thread about some difficulties I'm having with light box therapy for SAD, and I can't figure out which board to use. I'm trying to avoid the dreaded "redirect." Where should I post? Thanks.

She asks while cringing a bit...

And most folks seem to post about lightboxes in the Alternatives board, but I believe (I could be wrong) that Dr. Bob once said that the meds board was also okay since light boxes are not really an alternative therapy.

That doesn't really help, though, does it?

I think it's kind of a gray area, so I've left threads on both boards. But maybe I'd lean toward the main board because I'd consider it "proven to be safe and effective", see:

Redirects do seem, at times, to be the death threat to a thread. I'm not sure exactly why - it could be in part due to a poster "living" on one board and rarely going to the redirect board, so the posters who "live" on the redirect board don't respond. Some folks are all over all the boards and some stick to few. There is some familiarity and comfort that builds between the groups. I don't think it's meant as a slight but it does happen.

Should have proofread

I agree w/ Glydin. Also, it seems like the poster is being yelled at or something. I think I've only been redirected a few times, but it made me feel like saying, "I didn't do it on purpose! I didn't mean to misbehave!" But then again, as I type that it is making me realize that it is probably just my own issues. ;) Geesh. I guess that's why I need to spend so much on therapy.

Best,
EE

Hi GG,

Well, perhaps the word "dread" is extreme. I worry that my questions won't be answered or, as others here have suggested, the thread will die once it's redirected. I think the board is a bit too compartmentalized.

Sarah

I think those are all valid points, especially the part about threads dying. And sometimes by the time a thread gets moved, it's sort of older anyway. But sometimes not.

I know sometimes I try to make the post where I put the link to the redirect a bit more personal to make it seem less like somebody did something wrong. But if I'm in a hurry or tired or whatever, they get pretty impersonal, and I can see how that might not feel good at times.

When I redirect, I sort of feel like I'm organizing or doing some basic house-keeping. I'm not thinking "Geesh, I wish these people would figure this out!" or anything like that.

What about when a very short brand new thread gets redirected? If it's not yet had a chance to get going, is that less intrusive?

I agree. And whenever one of my posts gets redirected, I always feel angry and hurt and slightly humiliated, even though that seems kinda silly maybe.

thats a good point and also if the thread seem over that might be a better time to redirect? if there have been pleanty of replies and no activity for a few days then redirect it.

im personally not bothered by redirects becasue I figure they will land in the spot where they will get more appropriate answers. But in the case that the thread does have its own life in it wrong home then maybe let it play out and clean up when the party is over. Dont know...but I shouldnt be on the computer right now.

The problem with redirects as I see it is if you have just posted on it and want to stay involved. You have to go there and write anything or you will not receive notification of new posts. Maybe if there was a way to notify those who already posted without them having to repost until they have something to say. Fondly, Phillipa

I know that's an issue. But sometimes the whole thread isn't redirected, and I've been reluctant to assume that people who want to follow the original thread will want to follow the redirected one, too...
