There's a withdrawal board here that has a lot of suggestions for minimizing the withdrawal from Effexor, which can be harsh.
My first piece of advice, though, if you want to get off the Effexor, is to talk to your doctor. And if, as you suggest, he's reluctant to help you taper off the Effexor, ask him to explain why. While that seems obvious, I think if you ask him to give you a specific answer, he might rethink it all.
By the way, is this the same doctor who first prescribed it? Or is this another? If it's the first doctor, can you change doctors? Just one thought...
For what it's worth, you can get 375mg capsules, to help you taper down, and then they recommend a couple of days on something longer acting, like Prozac, to ease the end of the withdrawal.
Good luck.
