Excellent vent. I think ignorance is everywhere.
I've never lived in the bible belt, but work next to a woman who says idiotic things about the mentally ill (we're all faking it so we can collect disability) and that gays can be converted to normal. What is normal?
Job wise, figure out what you're good at and see where that ability can be used. Keep in mind I'm the Queen of the Employment Losers, and have reinvented my career path four times. I get interviews, I just don't get offers.
