What do I do about carpel tunnel?

I have, I believe to be, carpel tunnel in my right hand. It's so bad that sometimes the pain shoots my arm. My fingers are always numb and my thumb hurts like, like, ... beeeeeeeeeeep.
Should I just buy one of those braces, or should I see my doctor first?
It's starting in my left hand but NOT NEARLY as bad.
I don't know what is worse, the constant tingle and numbness or the pain.
