Hi Noa, I don't believe we have met either but I wanted to say I feel your pain. And I am so sorry you have been forced into this very demoralizing situation. I think too it is hard if it is the first time something like this has happened.
Now I have been a supervisor and my husband is an Executive VP with two departments under him, and he has had many an interviewee come to him when he has had job opportunities saying that they got downsized or simply laid off. He recently hired a guy that very thing you are describing happened to him. So I think that many employers won't look at it the way you do.
I do feel that you probably feel hurt and devastated by the layoff and therefore, the need to explain it others may come in to play. But I think your long work record will speak for itself. I would ask your supervisor if they will give you a good letter of reference. That might help you know more if it was anything more than downsizing. With a good reference from them, then I think that might be all you need not to have to explain anything.
Now i can too understand if you would rather not ask for one.
Again, so sorry for your pain.
