Home Alone

Posted by verne on November 8, 2006, at 4:15:50

Remember the two clowns in "Home Alone"? I only bring them up because this is the model for men (excuse the expression) in recent movies like:

"Spanglish" (perhaps any Sandler movie), and "Notting Hill". In both movies the fellow endures relentless abuse in the name of romance. The woman is allowed every whimsy and the "prince" puts up with it.

This reminds me of "Who's Afraid of Virginia Wolff?" "Let's get the guest".

I find what goes for "romance" sexist. Plain and simply: sexist. This sort of thing is like "school spirit", extreme patriotism, and "dating".

Further, what's called "romance" is steeped in deception. It's all about facades and pretending. (No wonder about the divorce problem)
There's a problem with the paradigm.

At least spare your kids and don't encourage or foster the myth. My daughter is in upper management at barely 21 years of age - doesn't wear makeup or act coy. She's married and even heterosexual. It's possible.

I hope that helps someone.
