I don't know what your situation is, but one way to get "in touch" with people & perhaps develop some acquaintances who might become closer than that, is to become involved in volunteer work.
In the past, when I've been alone or lonely (& I admit, it was years ago, but I sure still remember that feeling) I was able to push myself to be places where I might meet friends. At first it was very hard for me, because I was the new one & the other people knew each other, so I felt alone there also, BUT as yet other new people joined, I wasn't the NEW one any more & I could reach out to welcome them.
It can be a way to get to know people.
If you're feeling really bad, it might be just too much to even think of doing volunteer work.
If you are, however, here are some types of places:
old age homeshospital
some schools, although they might think it weird that a not-parent would volunteer!
library
museum
womens' centre (a really good one, if they might happen to need help)
food bank
I hope the hospital does write off your debt.
luv, Kath
