Antigua,
I've never been anything resembling one who loves sports, but I think your daughter is fortunate to have you as a mom.
Some possible ideas that I have are:
1. She will likely have to do some physical therapy after the surgery. Let the physical therapist know that She is a basketball player. The therapist might have other ideas when designing her recuperation.
2: Let the surgeon also know about your daughters love for the sport. He / She may have different methods or techniques for performing the surgery. There are many surgeries that are done differently depending on the what demands are expected of a particular body part might be.
3: This may go along with physical therapy, but perhaps she can do exercises through this that will help keep her in shape, before and after surgery that do not stress the foot. Maybe you could even arrange a visit with the PT before the surgery. Most times PT is discussed after surgery, but if you have the opportunity to do so before, then your daughter can get a head start. The PT might also be able to reassure her that she won't get fat through all of this. These are just a few ideas. I hope they help.
Dee.
