Oh - dogs definitely can get depressed, sad, AND lonely. When I first got Puddin', I was able to go home every day at lunch, so I could take her out and spend time with her while I ate. But it soon became obvious that she wasn't happy being alone for so long at a time, so I adopted Penny to keep her company, which has worked out well.
And I don't know about song birds or wild birds getting depressed, but certain domesticated birds (particularly the large ones that live for years and years) get very attached to their primary owner and can pine away for them if separated. I was fascinated at the thought of owning one of those $1500 parrots, as if I had that much money!, but when I read about how moody they can be and how insecure and so on, I decided that I'm moody enough for one household, so I'd better stick with my dogs.
