Since the day of my diagnosis, I have worn wrist guards to sleep. I have moderate to severe nerve damage in my left hand, moderate in my right, and I am recommended for the surgery. I couldn't have it because of some other surgical obligations (to my colon, among other things). My doc says it's NOT a local. He will only do it under twilight (you don't have to be intibated for that; it's just valium and other light sleeping stuff). Tell your doc you want twilight.
The wrist guards have kept me sane. My hands don't hurt nearly as much, the nerve damage has not progressed (to my knowledge), and I can do just about anything without my hands falling asleep. (They used to fall asleep driving, holding my daughter's hand, walking, doing anything.)
Good luck.
