They will, of course.

I saw a map of the existing wells in the Gulf. There were around 3,000. I remember there were 3 sectors.

The good news is that the USA, parts of Europe and China will (start to) do something about carbon fuel dependence and climate change. Australia won't though. Not now.
We had our chance and the moment has passed. Perhaps the coal industry is too strong and controls policy in the major parties.

China is doing most. I suppose that may be considered as 'following two courses at once'? Make sure there's no ambitious agreement at Copenhagen and then full speed ahead with renewables. Their solar hot water systems alone involve more power than all of Australia uses. Unlike us, the Chinese lack certain impediments to clear thinking and quick action.

But even California. David Mills was a professor of physics at a university in New South Wales. He tried to interest the Howard government in his ideas for large scale solar power generation using huge vats of molten salt as heat stores. Now he's doing it in California.

All Howard wanted was to use nuclear as a wedge against the left. Now, in my opinion, that is no way to run a country, but it is something with which you are more than familiar.
George Bush was exactly the same, using tax cuts and military spending as a means of hobbling future Democratic administrations. So much better to spend the money on the rich and overseas wars than to look after the vulnerable. In good times, you give the rich tax cuts and start wars. In bad times you bail out the big companies and say the deficit is a problem.

It speaks for itself. And we end up with a z grade political debate that commentators on ALL sides say is disgracefully inadequate. I shall vote Green.
