Hi Declan,

That's funny, you accidently combined the names of two people who have been indicted for corruption. There's Ken Lay, former CEO of energy giant Enron, then there's Tom Delay, Republican congressional leader and fundraiser. Both are major contributors to Bush and both are from Houston.

I do think the freakish weather has gotten people here thinking more about oil dependence issues. But that didn't stop the Congress from passing a new energy bill pushed by Cheney and Bush which gives huge subsidies to the oil industry.

I've been reading Kunstler's book, "The Long Emergency". Rolling Stone printed an excerpt. It's about the oil peak and the societal changes that have already started to occur. In the US, gas prices have almost doubled in the past year, while the government has not responded, I've observed people slowly adapting...i.e. riding transit more and driving smaller cars. I think bigger changes are to come.

I think the overall international response to Pakistan's crisis has been awful. Politically Pakiston is important to the US due to its proximity to Iraq and Iran. Yes Bush is a lame duck. The question is, can the opposition party come up with a candidate with some bold ideas who hasn't sold out to special interests.

warm regards ~Jake
