Reducing weight after Remeron/Mirtazipine

Posted by cubic_me on December 14, 2006, at 17:08:24

I stopped taking Remeron two weeks ago after putting on 40lb in 8 weeks (going from normal weight to obese).

I'm finding it difficult to shift any weight at all by diet and am unable to exercise much at the moment.

Does anyone have any experience of this and if there's anything that might help me shift even a little bit of this huge belly I've accumulated!

Thanks.

>Hi Cubic

you betcha!!

I successfully have been off Remeron for 6 and a half months and I must say the wt gain was terrible.. like you i gained 45lbs and was just a mess.. All i know is this drug screws up the metabolism big time... but there is hope cause I am almost back to my pre remeron wt... I now weigh 115 lbs from the original 145lbs! and i was 107 before.. its only been 2weeks for you so still early... it happens gradually and I really didnt notice the wt loss until after about 1month or 2... no diet, exercise or what have you will change this... your own body must do the work to "reset " itself... just eat healthy, and yes exercise, I mean i do and this will all aid in the recovery, but wont have a direct result on your wt loss yet..
Like I said, ive been off Remeron for over 6months and thats how long its taken to get to 115. so please be patient.. I just have another 8lbs to go and I know this will come..
I was on it for 3yrs , so i figure it will take time for the body to fully kick in..
others have told me the exact same thing

oh ya,,, dont go back on it... unless u wanna screw up the body again and be obese... im glad im free of it..
also are you on any other meds??? this could contrubute if you are,,, see IM not on anything and feel much much better..

Hang in there and good luck

Thanks Musty, that's fab to know. I know it's still early, and I'm not expecing and I'm not expecting anything too quickly, 30lb by next summer would be fantastic though (when I have to wear fewer clothes in the heat!)

I'm not on any meds at the moment. I go back in January to consider what to do next. To be honest I've gone back in to depression since coming off it, but I'd rather sit it out and wait for something else than keep piling on the weight. It's pretty hard to explain to people how you put on that much weight when they don't know anything of your mental health history (and don't want them to know!).

I'm so glad you've lost the weight, you seem to have done fantastically, I'm sure the last 8lb will come off eventually.

hi cubic_me,

if there's any way you can incorporate some regular exercise into your routine, i would say that was the #1 way i took off my 30lbs of remeron weight. exercise revs up your metabolism and helps your body detox and normalize. even something gentle like walking or yoga or gardening will help - and with your mood too. for me the weight came off gradually but steadily. good luck!

>Hey
Sounds like you are on the right track cubic...
again, I got depressed after coming off..it was withdrawl, despite what the Docs say!! I went to acupuncture and finally after 7months off, I am fairly stable mood... today was more off, but i believe its all from Christmas stress, and I was taking on alot... need to remind myself to pace myself and not to think too negative..
but the good news is that in this last week suddenly the last 5lbs /8lbs whatever has come off.. so many people have commented on my losing wt.. it feels good again to be back in my old slim body.. I am now back to my original 110lbs.. after gaining close to 45 lbs on that sh*t..
no more meds for me... I will just ride the waves and like I say I have had pretty good moods now , except for this week,... also Im 46 and the ol hormone thing I think is slowly coming about.. I will just ride this out too..
hang in there... you will be fine... the body does adjust eventually, despite what you hear out there... it happened to me..
take care
have a happy new year

Musky
