Effexor - I want off - but I'm terrified!

Posted by Juliaks on August 21, 2005, at 0:41:47

I have been taking 150mg of Effexor for 6 years.

I have missed many pills in the past (prescription ran out) and on the weekends I tend to forget to take my pill until later in the day. I am all too familiar with all of the horrible stuff that happens when I miss a pill. If I forget to take my pill until the afternoon, my day is completely ruined.

Lately I have been seriously considering going off Effexor, but my doctor seems to think it's a miracle drug. When I told her about how sick I get when I miss a pill, do you know what she said? She said 'don't miss a pill then!'. Gee, how helpful. I don't know if my doctor is going to support me going off the drug, but I am too damn scared to do it myself.

I decided tonight to read up about Effexor, and see what other people had to say.

Let's just say, I am even more terrified!

I feel better that I am not alone, but all I have been reading is that it takes forever to be rid of all of the withdrawal symptoms! I know for a fact that I am not going to be one of the lucky ones - and that no matter how I do this, it is going to suck. I feel like I'm addicted to crack! I swear this stuff is not any better!

I will not be able to survive months of withdrawal! I think I am being scared into staying on this horrible medication!

I took my last effexor june 20 this year withdrawal was the worst after three weeks in bed most of time I went on omega3 vit e and mood
enhancer from health food that is all natural
I now feel like a new person but it seemed like an eternity. I went cold turkey and it was hell
good luck
I believe you have to be strong to go off it because I am a strong person but was so close to going back on it the first 3 weeks

You can do it!
Not everybody has the same terrible symptoms. I had none (down from 225mg gradually) until the last 37.5mg to 0 mg drop, and switched to tapering. It was 10.5 weeks from 225mg to the last ~5mg (I was sure I was done a week after that) but it was totally worth it for me (8 weeks would be from when I was on 150mg). rabble_rouser had Zero withdrawal symptoms with multivitamins.

Maybe you can start with finding a new doctor to support your withdrawal, although most pyschiatrists would require at least two visits before working with you on that. I had vowed a good friend I wouldn't do it without being under doctor's care, and had to find a psych. for that.

Good luck!
