Hi guys

Posted by BlackIris on March 4, 2008, at 12:46:13

It's my first time creating a thread here...

I just have lots of trouble with life, I suppose. But who doesn't? :D

Just trying to get by.. School is getting hard. I feel like a failure all the time. I also feel fat - thank goodness I don't have eating disorder (I'm keeping my eyes on it so I won't develop one).

I feel anxious around people. I used to be such an outgoing kid, but I don't know what has happened to me. I still like hanging out with people but.. it's just not the same anymore.

My bf thinks I might be bipolar, which I don't think I am. If anything, a mild case of depression. And such low self esteem...

I reckon I should go see a counselor at my university.. =\ but I feel as if that'd make me a "psycho" . I know it is not, I'm a psychology major, but I just can't help feeling that by going to a counselor, it's an implicit way of admitting to myself that I'm not well, I'm not normal, I'm not good enough.

dog gone it, people like you!!!! i think that's from snl or some thing??? i remember 'bubba' once told me to write down something like that, stick it in my pocket and pull it out when i was feeling down. i thought it was the stupidest thing i'd ever heard!!! (did i spell stupid right? gosh, i'm feeling really stupid right now! :)

sooooooooooooo..... i'm kk!!!! seeing a therapist doesn't mean anything execept that you won't have to 'unlaod' your problems on your family/friends/ strangers you come across. PLUS!!!! sometimes they seem to really know what they're talking about!!! then again, sometimes thye're really wrong too!!!! :) the bonus is when you think they're wrrong, you can say 'hey man, you're really wrong' and unlike family, friends, and strangers in the park, you don't have to worry about them being mad at you or telling all your other friends aobut your problems!!!! see! it's a win, win situation dear!!!!! and, university counseling is CHEAP!!!! YAHOOO!!!! my first therapist was a university couselor and he was real nice (of course, he didn't ahve a clue, but he was real nice :)

so, now taht i've thoroughly confused you, i hope you have a great day and stay on babble for a really long time :)

BlackIris,
Welcome! I know you will find a lot of support here on this board and please check out some of the others (psych, meds, self-estee, etc.) There are many kind, wise, and supportive people here who will help you in any way they can. Considering the fact that you are a psych major, do you have an advisor or even a prof that teaches one of your classes that you feel you could talk to? I had my first anxiety attack in college and went straight to one of my professor's offices. Thank God, he was in! He calmed me down and made arrangements for me to see someone at the counseling center the next day. Maybe if you talk to your advisor or a prof they can give you the support you need to take the first step. Good Luck HUGS

Hi BlackIris,

((((((you))))))) I'm so glad you started this thread & reached out for support.

I hope you'll take a look at your feelings about seeing a counsellor. Every single one of us needs help of some kind at some time in our life.

It sounds like you could use some help at this point, & there's nothing wrong with that. I sometimes think that taking the big step to see a counsellor or therapist is a very brave thing to do. So many of us have been raised to think that there's something wrong with wanting or needing help. Actually, I think it takes someone who is insightful, smart, & wise (to name a few) to try seeing a counsellor if they're not feeling the greatest.

Maybe that would help you consider it with more comfort - to look at it as 'checking out' a counsellor.

You're studying psychology. You could view it as a learning experience in how the counsellor carries out a first meeting! Then you could decide if you want to continue & if you go for a second meeting, take that as 'how does the counsellor conduct a second meeting'.

I wish you the best.

Let us know how you're doing.

hugs, Kath

Thanks guys.

Few hours after my new message, I actually had a break down (I think? I never had one before) or something similar. I just couldn't stop crying.. So I immediately headed to counselor and got an appointment.

I'll stick around here, :D it seems like a very friendly and supportive place.
