packing for vacation--how depressing

Posted by beardedlady on June 18, 2002, at 9:26:32

I'm going away for a week. Here's my bag of "if I don't have these things, I won't sleep" items:

10 Serzone 100s
10 Serzone 150s
20 Sonata 10s
20 Zantac 75s
20 Ibuprofens (emergency—migraines)
20 Tylenol (doesn't work, but just in case)
Flonase (for allergies that I have all of the sudden)
Inhaler (for the asthma attack I've gotten three times in my life)
fresh, new earplugs
wrist guards (carpal tunnel)

It's sooooo depressing. I also have to put the pills in a locked box, as I'm traveling with a child (two if you count hubby), and the locked box has to remain in the cooler if it's hot outside, in the dark if it's not.

It really sucks.

And I know that I'm one of the lucky ones. I think about the folks on eight different meds.

Awful isn't it.. when we went on holiday I made sure I packed enough to last the hwole time away in my luggage, and also the same in my hand luggage incase I lost either!!

How do you control your carpul tunnel.. I have it in boith wrists, butmy right is much worse and really getting me down with the pain etc at the moment.. I;m on the waiting list for the op for that and an op on the tendons in my right forrearm, but the doc says they only do this op under local aneasthetic and I have a very severe phobia of locals...
Wondered if theres anything non-surgical I haven't tried yet that might help!

Ta,

Since the day of my diagnosis, I have worn wrist guards to sleep. I have moderate to severe nerve damage in my left hand, moderate in my right, and I am recommended for the surgery. I couldn't have it because of some other surgical obligations (to my colon, among other things). My doc says it's NOT a local. He will only do it under twilight (you don't have to be intibated for that; it's just valium and other light sleeping stuff). Tell your doc you want twilight.

The wrist guards have kept me sane. My hands don't hurt nearly as much, the nerve damage has not progressed (to my knowledge), and I can do just about anything without my hands falling asleep. (They used to fall asleep driving, holding my daughter's hand, walking, doing anything.)

Good luck.

its not the having meds that gets to me about travelling..it having to keep em safe..its about the only thing you can't insure..I suppose the answer is to take twice the amount and keep one lot in a locker somewhere..

That's the problem I'm having now. I have to travel with my daughter, and no one makes anything that you can store your meds in and lock them up. The locked boxes are just too big. I'm looking for one of those plastic pill cases with the days of the week printed on the top--WITH A LOCK ON IT. Maybe I'll have to invent it and make a million.

Yeah, I wear wrist guards and tubi-grip (for the tendon damage) in bed, and about 70% of the rest of the time (just not for typing as it rubs and hurts when I'm typing! and gets wet when I'm washing up!!)...

I'm in the UK which is why it might be different, but knowing there is the option of being nealry asleep is good.. I'll have to find out about it.. Been putting it off for 3 years now which is terrible!!

I ahve constant pins and needles in my right hand, and left falls alsleep at a drop of a hat!! Its all very strange. My movement in my right is severely limited these days so I really have to get it sorted out soon!!

Thanks for the reply

I have heard the surgery is about 100% effective. The doctor told me it's a myth that it's only effective for some people. Those people for whom it doesn't work, he says, usually have some other problem on top of it, like arthritis or tendonitis, which is still causing pain.

In any case, don't fear the local. My mom has her hands worked on all the time with locals. The only part that hurts is the needle, and even that doesn't hurt, as they put that ice stuff on you first to numb your wrist. It's a very quick surgery (I think 20 minutes).

Get it done already! You shouldn't have to live with that pain. (Yours is obviously much worse than mine, which only just started back in November.)

Thanks Beardy :o) (I love calling you that as one of my favourite lizards are Beardies.. Bearded Dragons!)

Will make a GP appt this week :o) Probably nice long waiting list over here though!

I've had it for nearly 10 years.. had the nerve stimulation tests 6 years ago now... the joys of typing with no trianing!!

One thing.. I used to find typing really painful, and was told to do a touch typing course which has helped hugely with it!!

Enjoy your camping trip.. Is there anyway you could adapt a box to take a small padlock for your meds??

Yes to the padlock idea. I was thinking of putting on a bag that has two zippers. I thought of it yesterday while shopping at Target.

Last night, for the first time since November, I fell asleep without putting my wrist guards on! Aargh! So I woke up at 3:30 with pins and needles and freaked out! It took me until 5:00 to fall back to sleep, as I was agitated.

P.S. I like those dragons, too. I hear they're actually affectionate!

They are really affectionate (when they want to be!!).. I don't actually have any of my own at the moment (waiting for a bigger house to increase my lizards!!), but they are soo lovely! I love their faces! :o) They have quite long claws though so aren't reccomended for youngsters who might scare them a little as the claws can really scratch badly... but they're totally tameable and I've even heard of some learning their names and coming when called (though I;m dubious.. my ladies know when I take their lid off they're gonna get fed, but i think thats the extent to which they love you!)

I'm currently studying herpotology (reptile studies!!) and have 4 gecko's, but no room for any more which is soo unfair!! *lol*

I saw an affectionate iguana at a nature center two months ago. She was a beauty. She did this strange nodding of her head whenever the caretaker was near. That was her sign of affection. She did it to me once, and I was flattered!

Hi Beardy,

wanna trade?

I'm going away for 2 weeks with wife & son. We are a traveling pharmacy:

Me:

Depakote
Zoloft
Wellbutrin
Ambien
Lorazepam
Allegra (for my allergies)

Wife:

Prozac
Wellbutrin
Ambien

Son:

fluoride tablets

Incidentals:

earplugs (for me)
Mylanta (for my wife)
ibuprofen
... etc.

We have the pill reminders which are divided into 7 days that are childproof. In order to open a compartment, you must push on a release tab on the side. They're great, though our son knows not to mess with ANYBODY's medications.
