but i got that Trump was being sarcastic when he was responding to what the science people were telling him.
he started out repeating back what he heard them say.
then he ad libbed a few more ideas along similar lines in a way that increasingly extended what they were saying to culminate in an obvious absurdity.
which is unlike him. i thought. mostly he was about making other people look good. i don't watch much of what he says, but i was a little surprised at him...
mocking.
or being sarcastic, yes.
why didn't anybody else get that?

I think it is about the UV light / radiation machines.
So... Sunlight kills bacteria and viruses.
And Sunlight is composed or comprised or can be viewed as being composed or comprised of different waves... At different wavelengths / energy levels, or something.
So there is UVA and UVB. And I forget... One of those doesn't go through glass. So there were issues about whether people in extended stays in hospital or old folks homes might not be getting the UVB (I think it was but don't quote me) for things like skin and bone wound healing. Vitamin D sort of related stuffs...
And then there is UVC. And that one is higher energy.
But the higher energy forms of radiation can cause radiation damage to the DNA in your cells. Can induce mutations to the DNA which could result in hastened aging or even cancers.
It is UVC that Duke was looking at for steralising face masks. Because it is a higher energy thing and I suppose because there is a machine for that. I mean.. HOspitals have autoclaves. So it makes sense to start out seeing whether there is some cycle on the autoclave that might do the job. But if there isn't, then maybe we can make a fancy new machine for the purpose and... SEll it. Sure, why not.
I have been seeing that they are taking forehead temperatures with an electronic devise. My thermometer states that there is core temperature (which is what you really want to know) but that's internal. And since you can't get your themrmometer in there, exactly, you can take rectal, oral, or axillary. But that the difference from core temperature will be greater as you move more peripherally. Makes sense. And you can try and estimate (e.g., add .5 of a degree for oral) or.. I suppose ideally you use the same method every time you check and you check frequently so you know what is normal for that person with that method and you can detect difference. Or maybe you get a similar ish sort of a thing in using the same device across a number of people...
Anyway... Point is... Forehead would not be a very accurate measure of core temperature because of all the wind chill it gets flapping in the breeze. They said there were problems with oral - you have to keep your gob shut for awhile. And auxillary -- no flapping your arms about to cool them down. So I guess the forehead detectors (if they are useful at all) are detecting severe cases of fever only. The surface body scanners, generally... Or... Is it like when you do a scan and the densest part of the bone absorbs the most rays? The temperature scanners don't work like that -- do they? They are measuring what is radiated off teh surface only -- aren't they?
Anyboo...
From these forehead scanning super easy super convenient temerature taking or checking machines...
To machines that promise to steralise or disinfect your hands with UV light. You place your hands on a surface and then a light flashes like you placed your hands on a photocopier and then wizz bang they are steralised. Or steralising the body with a machine that looks like a metal detector that they just sort of wave about mystically in front of you.
These machines are hoaxes -- right?
I was suprised... A video I was watching of the hygine measures in Hong Kong to help prevent the spread. One of the measures was supposed to be a UV hand sanitising machine. ANd I wondered.. The mechanims.
Duke confirmed that UVC light can be used to disinfect items (e.g., they were trying it on face masks) but you couldn't use UVC light to radiate a person without harming or damaging htem with the UVC rays. That's how the UVC kills the virus. It damages the nuclear material.
Maybe they were thinking that Trump would tell General Motors to start making UV light machines to steralise / disinfect people. Maybe that was the idea.. Where they were feeling out.. Seeing if they could go there.
I saw the Cernobyl weightlifing video had a 'steralising' hand machine outside the cafeteria in part of one of the videos. I wondered if he was taking the piss. Wasn't anybody worried about their exposure to nuclear radiation taking a look around a nuclear explosion / meltdown / whatever it was site??

well, at least part of that wasn't right.
i mean that with x rays you get a picture of the densest part.
i don't know that with a thermal detector you get a picture of the hottest part. Do you?
i don't know.

in the lab. discovered that some substance had some affect on some pathway.
discovered that that was a pathway involved in this or that particular disease...
wanted to make enough of the drug to get it to where it would be effective...
but the side-effects and harms that could result from people who don't need it, who won't benefit from it, taking it instead...
how do you limit the supply?
you can try and increase education. tell people the mechanism. explain that only problems with that mechanism will benefit or profit from that drug.
but people are wishful thinkers and reality testing is loose.
you could make a test. and they need a positive test result (or 2/3 or whatever) to get access to the drug.
but then the laboratories start finding what they are supposed to find...
what i would do, if i was a drug company or whatever...
is i would leave something out of the method that i stated needed to be followed in order to get a good result. so if people followed the protocol as directed -- they wouldn't get good result.
to see...
who contacts me. 'we have tried and tried and tried and we cannot get your damned product to work can you help / what's the story?'
at which point i would suspect i might not be dealing with a psychopath, after all.
and they might be ready for genuine product.

i mean you tell people and you tell people and you tell people and you ask people nicely:
'please don't lie about your lab data. you lab findings'.
you even tell people:
'if you don't find something that you expect to find'
(aka a positive test result in a positive patient)
'then that it in itself an important finding'.
but the people do what the people gonna do so what you gonna do in the face of it?
yeah.

because you think about the Eliiko barbell. Or any competition grade barbell. the work that goes into producing it.
it is supposed to weigh what it is supposed to weigh with a very very very very very very small margin of error.
that means that once the barbell is made they find it may come up a little over or under. so they need to fiddle about it with to get it within the weight tolerance.
the freaking barbell needs to make the weigh in.
that involves labor.
time.
and then you get some person who wants to buy one and have it as a trophy on his mantle piece. and never use it.
and you think of the work that goes into getting the knurling just right for lifting. so it is grippy enough for 6 maximum efforts in a seasoned lifters hands... but not so grippy as to take the skin off a seasoned lifters hands...
and you think about how it doesn't make any f*ck*ng difference to the guy who wants it as a work of art -- except in some very very very very very abstract way. that he should pay for.
compared to the athlete who has devoted hour upon hour upon hour apon hour upon days weeks months years of actually lifing barbells to actually lift it so as to display or show that which is of value in it...
sigh.
and you think of the labor that goes into quality controlling face masks and so on...
and so there is a very genuine sense of 'and who is asking?'
i mean... if they don't do tests properly when we send them expensive to manufacture high quality product then why send them expensive to manufacture high quality product? why not just send them cheap garbage. they can't even tell the difference.
and the people get to watering down hand sanitiser supplies. automated dispensers delivering just that little bit less, just that little bit less, just that little bit less.
driving things down to teh swampy rubbish of nothing. every f*ck*ng time.
sigh.

and if NZ was supplied with a metric ton of keytruda...
it might be doled out like candy to all the skin cancer people because we didn't do physical checkups in GP practice each year to track moles and things like that. course we didn't.
or it might be vanished of the shelves and sold back to the USA via exhange for opiates from Canada... or... who knows what.
really.
sigh.
