Dreams of My Father

Posted by Sigismund on December 15, 2008, at 0:55:50

I'm surprised President Bush was abroad.
Good to see him out and about.

Anyway, I was flipping through
"Dreams of My Father"
which I won't be able to get out of the library because our library sucks and everyone will want it, but I went to the part, toward the end, where Obama's grandmother in Kenya is speaking, that bit that is quoted in some reviews.

Apart from a huge culture difference, beautifully portrayed in her language, what you have is the history of British colonialism in that part of Africa.

Which seems to me hugely significant.

I'd like to link The Average American Party's opinion of this book, but it would violate, by a considerable margin, the civility rules of Babble.

What are they frightened of?

I think it's because he has a passport (so to speak).

I read also that Sarah Palin's church has been firebombed.

And SP took the position that it's about her. What does that say?

I think she apologized *if* her being a member turns out to be connected, *if* it turns out to be arson, which is (strongly?) suspected at this point. At least that's the way I understand her quotes when I read them.

I think it could say she's a friend to her fellow church goers, and a mom (there were children in the church building at the time) and that she feels for the people who were in danger. And maybe also that although she can't be responsible for actions others may take, she feels badly her membership there *may* have triggered something violent and dangerous?

Taking responsibility for possible unintended consequences of her candidacy?

At least you have it to flip through. Two libraries so far where I live kind of chuckled when I asked about it. The waiting lists are huge and one has 16 copies - all out!!!

I want to read it and "The Audacity of Hope". My SIL read parts of the latter and didn't care for it, so now I am more intrigued. I like a good debate about books and such.

The Mau Mau uprising in Kenya would have happened in memory of his family.

So, my expectation is that Obama will be more able to contain within his own mind the complexity of the world.

I am ever so grateful that President-Elect Obama exhibits the presence of a mind that will stay engaged with us and the world.

The world is such a complicated and often terrible place, and any single person knows next to nothing about it.

I read yesterday something by Arundathi Roy about the Mumbai attack.
I've forgotten it already, but there was nothing familiar in what she wrote.
It was all Indian and Pakistani politics about which I was ignorant.

We need governments that help us form more balanced and informed opinions about the world, especially given our attention span.
