Hooray! Can use Wite-Out on ballots!

Posted by corafree on November 7, 2006, at 15:34:46

Called county voting, and was told can wite-out over inked error, ink in correct circle of course, and drop off (not go in polling place).

Guess it sort of throws out those not legible, and they are inspected by 'human beings'(?)! Anyway, then can see if said Yes or No to props, or selected correct names for public office choices.

Got a terrible cold. Couldn't stand in line.

We've had mechanical ever since my mother first brought me with her when she voted, and they upgraded to electronic a few years ago.

I've never seen a paper ballot in my life.

We were flabbergasted at the idea of chads. If Louisiana has had voting machines with switches since the seventies, you'd think all states would have had at least that much.

I've voted on mechanical, paper (fill in the circle), butterfly punch with hanging chads, and electronic! My favorite was the paper. Just color in the circle like on a test and feed it into a machine. E-slates are YUCK! Not at all voter friendly.

I've just never known anything else, and never really realized that there was anything else until the contested elections. I always thought counting the ballots just meant adding up the results from each machine.

I miss the old mechanical ones, and can't quite figure out why they replaced them. The new ones have no overriding advantages to the lever that I can see. Except maybe that they can fit more description into the amendments. But the new ones lack that satisfying kerchunk that meant you'd cast your vote for better or worse. A ding just doesn't evoke the same solemn feeling.

Americans still using telegrams for votes? ;-)

Sorry...I don't mean to be, ummm, smug. Up here in Canada the whole country has one voting system. A name with a checkmark box beside it. Period. Our (Federal) elections usually take about 3 hours to decide after the polls close. Done. And we have the second largest land mass in the world! Finished.:P~ In bed by 10:00 p.m.

You must recall that states rights used to be pretty big in this country in the days before people relocated so easily. The original states were quite ambivilant about handing power over to the federal government and the provisions for elections reflect that. It once really as a "United States", a set of individual former colonies turned states who united together where it served the common good but considered themselves relatively independent.

It leads to a few idiosyncracies that don't make seem as intuitively easy to understand as they used to be. But I think I honor the original reasons behind them.

I still am not sure how I feel about states rights as opposed to a strong federal government. Well, I'm sure how I feel about states' rights in regard to slavery of course. And perhaps the end of the Civil War was the beginning of the end for a group of united but separate states? And the beginning of the supremacy of the federal government? I'm not sure there... Daddy would know.

Same here, that's how Australia does it, with an independant electoral commission.

And compulsory voting (nm)

Really I didn't mean to. It was in my hand with my reading glasses and I didn't realize I had taken it until I was at my car. I was too embarrased to go back in and return it. Wanna bet my taxes go up by one pen at the cost of $$$$$?

Oh ... now I know what 'chads' are, they're the little pieces of paper that are supposed to fall out when they're punched, right?

Does anyone remember using 'pencil' v. 'pen' to fill in little ovals? Seems like I do.

I guess they could, if they were bad peeps. Wouldn't it be nice if after you completed your form, a machine printed out a copy of your choices for you.

Sorry...I don't mean to be smug just teasing above (nm)
