I've just never known anything else, and never really realized that there was anything else until the contested elections. I always thought counting the ballots just meant adding up the results from each machine.
I miss the old mechanical ones, and can't quite figure out why they replaced them. The new ones have no overriding advantages to the lever that I can see. Except maybe that they can fit more description into the amendments. But the new ones lack that satisfying kerchunk that meant you'd cast your vote for better or worse. A ding just doesn't evoke the same solemn feeling.
