it is presently illegal to commercially hunt whales in the south pacific. japanese continue to hunt whales allegedly for 'scientific research' and the 'leftovers' are then sold commercially.
this is the nz governments stance on the claim to 'scientific research'
http://www.beehive.govt.nz/ViewDocument.aspx?DocumentID=24709
they are hunting them in an area that is a designated whale sanctuary. they have no territorial claim on the waters
greenpeace (volountary organisation is doing its best...)

it is just staggering that people would risk the destruction of so much...
to line their own pockets
and the pockets of people they know in their lifetime...

greenpeace are a morally serious group.
they are taken seriously.
they go about things appropriately.
they back themselves up with research.
they distance themselves from more radical activists.the green party came from there...
got a few seats in parliament.
a fair few people thought they were a good influence on labour. gave them a bit more of a social / environmental conscience.
but of course...
if you are putting money into welfare and health and education...
the economy is going to suffer (esp short term)
compared to if you cut back on that and do what you can to support business / trade (and screw the cost to society / the environment).we were lucky to get labour...
but there is a strong conservative influence.
the govt. wouldn't give labour a confidence and supply vote (control of the budget) if there was a labour - green alliance.
so...
the greens are still fairly independent i guess.
they have a voice.
but how can you compare with profits?
i mean, really...
?
