I don't live in Britain but would like to hear from those who do about their thoughts on this?

You seen those movies set in Scotland or northern England? People are really rough with each other in them. Mike Leigh movies for example.

Declan, sorry about this but I'm Irish. And am a devotee of Northern england mysteries. took me a coupla years to figure out what "crisps" are.
Seems like all English detctives live on "crisps" and single malt whiskies.
I, exercising my privlege as a manly-man do not trust anything aged in oak. Costs to much, and is full of tannins. Anyhow are you talking about "Trains-spotting" and that chick flick of which the name I can't recall.
Please send me some recommendations re: northern English flicks. My wife has me watching "Monarch of the Glenn." Man, but I'm a decent husband. Worse I'm starting to like the stuff.
But Northern England sounds a great deal like Bridgeport Connecticut, Known to the cognoscenti as the "armpit of Long Island Sound."
Anyway, I enjoy your posts. Should I? Am I approaching hypermania. when I feel good I'm hyper manic. When I want to eat my shoes, I'm normal. Please recommend some "northern English flicks" Hetty Wainthrop excluded, please.
regards, Cockeyed.

OK, yes, Monarch of the Glen's a worry. Mike Leigh did 'Naked', 'Secrets and Lies', more recently 'Vera Drake', but there are a lot more. Not romantic films.

Hi Miss Honeychurch
I've never been to Scotland, but reading that doesn't surprise me about Scotland or the rest of Britain in general.. Violent assaults are very popular over here espeically on Friday and Saturday nights when people have had a drink. I also noticed the British stood out when I lived abroad - during the summer season where I lived in the Canary Islands it is mainly british tourists (or lots more british) the bouncers and security of the bars and nightclubs have very much increased work with the trouble they get from the British fighting after they've had a drink. Where as in the winter when its more the Scandinavian people ~ the security have it easy, apart from when the odd British people were over and decided to fight.
I thought there was more violent crime related to guns and murder in America though compared to that of Scotland from documentrys I've seen on TV. I remember one programme I watched where american police officers were talking about an area where the weapon of choice was an AK47 or something like that and at the weekend there was so much murder related to drugs I think, that the police used a term called NHI when a body was found dead. It meant no human involved if I remember correctly...
Kind regards
Nick

Extreme violence has occurred lately between tribal groups in Africa, in Bali in the mid-sixties; thousands have died in India over religious disputes...history is full of examples.
Some areas may be worse than others in the short term, but in the big scheme violence seems to be in all of us.
warm regards ~Jake
