With the resignation of moderate Supreme Court jusice Sandra Day O'Conner American women can look forward to a reduction of some of those troublesome personal health decisions you were forced to make with your physician. Come on, you've been hoping that men of high moral fiber like President Bush (executions and starting a war notwithstanding) would make these decisions for you. He knows what's right, after all, God talks to him, and he knows what's best for you.
(I'm going on vacation anyway Bob).

And so you know, as a woman, I am very excited that Bush will finally be able to put someone on the bench. Hopefully, this next justice will start us back down the road towards the seperation of power our founders envisioned. The courts have too much power right now and are no longer interpreting the law as they should. Personal politics and beliefs have been the determination of too many rulings...not law.

I agree t. Medical decisions should be made by patients not legislators, Presidents should be elected by citizens not courts, end of life decisions should be made by each one of us not governors, and there should be a clear separation of church and state, among other things.
Oh, I don't visit the politics board so I'm just being social with my friends before I head up North to tranquilitity. Feel free to bump this anywhere you like, though.

Feel free to bump this anywhere you like, though. We actually don't agree on a lot of political things. I may not agree with specific legislation, but we are the ones who vote the people into office. If we don't like what they are doing then vote them out. It is our responsibility. What I don't agree with are the courts interpreting the legislation based on their own politics or belief systems. It should only be based on if the legislation is constitutional and whether or not it follows the law.

Please respect the views of others and be sensitive to their feelings. The last time you were blocked it was for 3 weeks, so this time it's for 6.
If you or others have questions about this or about posting policies in general, or are interested in alternative ways of expressing yourself, please see the FAQ:
http://www.dr-bob.org/babble/faq.html#civil
Follow-ups regarding these issues, as well as replies to the above post, should of course themselves be civil.

Hi Toph,
So sorry about your block and it's length. On the other hand, I hope you have a lovely vacation and return to us rested, happy, and well.Your post reminded me of the converations my hubby and I have whenever we watch Sunday morning news shows or the President's speeches, etc. We tend to get a bit sarcastic and absurd. It's a coping mechanism for us. Bet you would fit right in. Although you'd have to wear your jammies and eat pancakes. That okay? ;)

OMG, Dr. Bob, what are you thinking!?!?!? Toph's block is unwarranted, IMO. I have heard far worse things said by members of political panels or political pundits and commentators on the national news! I, for one, am not so thin-skinned that a tongue-in-cheek comment will cause me to feel put down or hurt my feelings. We are human, and we are adults, and as such, we are going to have views and, sometimes, we are going to make remarks that some might not like. That's just life. So, if you ask me (which you didn't, I know, but I am going to tell you anyway), in this case, the time does not match the crime, if there was a crime at all. And, while we are at it, I think you really need to reconsider this whole doubling of time for repeat offenses. It does not make any sense at all IMO And, it is really demoralizing.

I actually disagree and can understand why he blocked Toph. You said you've seen worse "by members of political panels or political pundits and commentators on the national news!" That doesn't matter on this website. As I've been learning the last few weeks, there is a fine line between a little sarcasm and being offensive. I think that is what happened here. Toph was very sarcastic in his comments, but he went overboard with them. Bush is our president whether you like him or not. That office demands respect even if you don't respect the person who has the title. Toph was disprespectful and his comments could very easily be offensive to anyone who supports Bush's decisions.
I could have been just as sarcastic with my responses to Toph, but I chose my words wisely so as not to be offensive. I'm an EXTREMELY sarcastic person, but while on this board there are a lot of times where I have to hold that side of me back. And if I can't, I don't post. Sarcasm is often very offensive to someone. That's what makes it so funny.
There are some posts on this site that are just as sarcastic, and I'm surprised haven't been stopped because of the same reason as here (i.e. Tom Cruise threads). Dr. Bob is human. He'll miss some things and go overboard on others. I don't think he was wrong in this case...IMHO.

I think this block was entirely in line with Dr Bob's rules of civility, too. I also think that perhaps Toph knew it might have been coming ("I'm going on vacation anyway" was how he put it).
IMO this block was consistent.
Interestingly enough, I'm learning a lot - perhaps not about what Dr Bob's intentions are, but about civility in general, in reading "Choosing Civility" by P.M.Forni. I'm probably once again late to the table on this, but it's giving me a greater appreciation about how our communications on sites like this affect those who read them. Very interesting reading for me.

I agree with Tamara. Toph's statements may have fallen outside of Dr. Bob's civility guidelines but I think the guidelines are too rigid to begin with. I understand the need for civility rules but the doubling and tripling of posts as time goes on is absurd. It causes good people who have committed minor offenses to be banned for really long periods of time and then they leave the forum for good. The block length should match the severity of the crime. We don't give those who commit a petty theft the same amount of punishment that we give a murderer but that's exactly what the current system does here. I certainly hope Toph comes back after his vacation. It would be yet another huge loss for Babble if he doesn't.
