Anyone following this case? The Austrailian woman sentenced to 20 years for drug smuggling in Indonesia. She's clearly innocent and 93% of Austrailians believe that she's innocent. On the other hand, over 80% of Indonesians think she's guilty.
I put this in the politics section since the outcry in Austrailia may bring down Howard's government and create a rift with Indonesia.
My real concern is freeing Shapelle Corby from what amounts to a death sentence (life expectancy in an Indonesian jail is 10 years). To that end, I've been writing various ministers (Mr Downer for example) and joining online petitions.

I'm sure there are other misspellings but I just discovered that I've been throwing an extra vowel into Australian (not austrAILian, as I had thought). I knew something was wrong with it but that didn't stop me when I wrote numerous letters to Australian ministers and newspapers earlier.
Ugh

I'm sure they'll know who you were talking about. That case is really scary. Good for you for doing something about it. I hope you can get her sentence overturned.K

That was pretty freaky.
There was a biological package (sorry, not very coherant at the mo) delivered to the indonesian(??) ambassador in Australia. The first time there has been a bio hazard threat thingie in Australia. They had to quarantene the building and the ambassador etc had to stay there while they investigated the package.
Don't know what it was...
There was concern it might be Anthrax or something...
The PM offered a public apology on behalf of Aus. saying that Aust. did not condone that sort of protest.
Freaky though.Good for you Verne.
It doesn't really help
(Thoguh they swear it isn't relevant)
That about 6 aussie guys got done for taking a fairly hefty package of H over a little while before...

The whole situation seems strange and sad. Frankly, it made me think to myself that I would never, ever travel to Indonesia, ever. I'm not a drug-user. But a country that is THAT tough on people who might be innocent - wow.
Really? the life exp. is 10 yrs in a prison there? My gosh. Awful.
I hope your letters help her situation.

Yeah. Bali is a nice place to holiday though. I think Australians are talking about boycotting it as a holiday destination.
>I'm not a drug-user. But a country that is THAT tough on people who might be innocent - wow.
I guess they figured that there wasn't a reasonable chance that she might be innocent...
> Really? the life exp. is 10 yrs in a prison there? My gosh. Awful.
And the moral of the story:What may have happened is that someone stashed some drugs in her suitcase on a domestic flight. They intended to pick it up at the end of the domestic flight but couldn't get to it in time. She boarded international - and was picked up at the other end.
So: lock your suitcases peoples.
Sure people can smash the lock, but then you will know your suitcase has been tampered with, and you will also have that as evidence. It is hard to know...
Dope is easy enough to pick up in Bali...
But...
Sometimes people do like to take a little of their own personal stash on holiday with them...
It is surely possible that that is what she did
Without really thinking of the possible consequences of that.I was suprised at how many people were transporting ecstasy and dope via domestic airlines when I was studying over there. They didn't really seem to think anything of it.
The Kiwi's were a little more careful - but not much.It would have been nasty to have gotten stapped...
But Bali...
Jez people, leave your stash at home.

Since 9/11 I don't believe we're even allowed to lock our suitcases on flights originating in the U.S.

I remember when I was in highschool, I went to Florida each year with the best friends' family. We drove, straight through, 24 hours, with 3 or 4 drivers in the car. Anyway, one year, we made some hash cookies to make the looooooooog drive a little more interesting. Everybody knew we had cookies, just not that some were, you know, special LOL. Anyway, we didn't even think about crossing the border with our supply of cookies and hash. Plus, we were fried before we hit the border, so it was not weighing too heavily on our minds, really. I don't think I would do something like that in this day in age.

Apparantly shes been to bali about 4 or 5 times over the last couple years...
Apparantly members of her family have spent time in jail with drug convictions...
Apparantly it is really really hard to get dope in Bali now because of the way the authoraties have clamped down...
Apparantly selling that amount to surfer tourists is a really really really feasible way of financing regular holidays...I don't know anymore.
I just don't know.

These days dogs would probably sniff out the hash in the brownies and you'd be in BIG trouble!
