I've never understood posts like this. Why test? Why not just post what you wish to post? If it goes through, you know you're no longer blocked. If it doesn't, you know you're still blocked. I just don't get why the extra step and extra post.

maybe people don't think they're literally blocked-- and are testing to see if someone (ie a deputy, I suppose) tells them they still are?

I don't know, if not that. Hmm. Or maybe they think that if they're blocked and they successfully try to post, it will be held against them, so they use the phrase testing to indicate that they're not sure if it's okay?

Or maybe it's magical thinking, so that they won't feel silly if it doesn't go through, even though they already know that they aren't sure?

because i don't want to waste all my creativity up to find 'error you are blocked HA HA HA HA HA HAHAHAHAHHA you jsut lost all that time and effort for nothing, loser'

ok, maybe it doesn't say that, but i feel that way. it's happened many times that i've posted something thinking i wasn't blocked, but found 'bam' i'm still blocked. i don't particularly feel like attempting to save my post (if that's even possible) to my desktop (that'd just call to all my paranoid thoughts 'everyone will read how very crazy you are') until i'm able to post again.

sorry for the lengthy explaination, but i've been burned by attempting to post early when coming out of a block, so i always test first,

(shew, that was a mouthful :)

well said KK.
I swear I got PTSD from a time I was blocked and had NO idea I would be, and tried to post, and it came up that I was blocked. I felt really really bad, and it triggered alot bad stuff in me bout being bad.
I got the scars to prove it.

Those are possibilities. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this. It's been one of those things I always wondered about when I saw it. I suppose there is not one answer that's the same for everyone who does/has done that. And the two responses that followed make sense.

Have a good day. :)

Thanks for explaining about that, KK and muffled. I can see how that could be upsetting, like finding a locked door or even having a door slammed in your face when you just want to say something. I wouldn't like to feel that way, either. So if I'm hearing this right, it's like sticking your toe in the water to test before diving in, so you don't get a nasty shock from the temperature?

When I was blocked, I tried to post a couple of times when I thought the block was over, only to learn it wasn't yet. I don't think any of what I was trying to post was all that complex or compelling, so I wasn't concerned about saving the text for later. But I'd be annoyed if I tried to post something I'd worked on for awhile and then had to decide what to do with it if I were still blocked.

Thanks again for sharing your thoughts and feelings about this.

>But I'd be annoyed if I tried to post something I'd worked on for awhile and then had to decide what to do with it if I were still blocked.

**It is interesting the two very different responses above...
For you. its a mere annoyance,
For me. Its 'sorta' partly like a door in the face, in thats its shocking, but for me, its more like a trigger, inasmuch, when I went to post, and was still blocked, all the shame and emarrassesment, and feeling ostracized, and like a leper, etc...SLAMMED me all over again. Obvo this is a trigger thing for me, this whole getting blocked business...
So yes, the diff responses are interesting, and of course, no doubt a large part of what makes it difficult to administrate this place with any hard and fast rules....w/o SOME people at least, getting VERY badly hurt by it :-(
Thanks GG.
Take care,
Muffled

I’ve never understood why people take prominent roles in web forums then announce they are leaving, but don’t.

I’ve never understood why some people need to quiz others about their behavior when those others' behavior has no impact on the person quizzing.

Sometimes the only thing I get out of reading someone’s message saying they don’t understand somebody else is the feeling the person being quizzed might be irrational, or beyond understanding. Other times, or at the same times, I get the feeling a person might talk about how they don’t understand someone else to encourage me to feel the person is not understandable, or not rational.

Why remind others that posts containing the word “test” are sometimes efforts to start posting again after being subject to a punitive action?

When I read messages expressing a person's lack of understanding and their failure to comprehend, I ask myself, why do they need to understand?

When I see such statements, I ask myself, is their statement that they don’t understand constructed so as to help them develop an understanding? Does the person stating that they don’t understand something explore any possible understandings in an effort to correct a misunderstanding, or does it simply convey their sense of incomprehensibility with regard to the subject.

For example, if a person does not understand why a person clears their throat before they start speaking, do they say “I don’t understand why people clear their throat before they start speaking” or do they offer reasons a reasonable person might consider, such as “I don’t understand why a person might clear their throat before speaking – sometimes it seems they are trying to refine the acoustic environment of their throat, or are they uttering a sound to see if others in the area respond to the sound, so as to test if anyone is listening before they start speaking. Or, maybe the person doesn’t want to waste mental energy expressing thoughts when nobody is listening. I don’t know. Can you tell me what is your reason?”

Sometimes when I read some messages in some places where people are expressing an inability to understand, I ask myself, does this person have a history of trying to understand others? Do they, in other texts, demonstrate skills for collaborative development of understanding, or do their expressions of incomprehension often correlate with others feeling incomprehensible? Do they generally help others develop a sense of purposefulness or a sense of worthlessness?

I particularly don’t understand forum administrators who pretend to foster civil, supportive dialogue, but who, over a period of several years, nurture and even empower as authorities in that forum people who often engage in conversations that tend to result in others feeling worthless. Sometimes I wonder if such a person feels worthless.

One time, I met a wealthy man working in a care-giving profession who said others might express concerns about the wealth he and his peers accumulate because they envy him and his peers. I felt put down when he minimized my disclosure that I often feel repulsed by people who accumulate wealth with no concern for justice, for others who are hungry and homeless and who use their wealth in such a way to destroy the opportunities for life-forms to survive on his planet. The poor fellow just couldn’t understand that I want no part of what he has, that I feel sickened to even consider living that way myself.

Oh no, not at all. It's funny, but for some reason I was struggling with a closing for my reply to you. I have no idea why. But "thanks again" or "Take care" just didn't sound right to me. So I went with the ol' have a good day. I wasn't jumping for joy with that one, either, but I had to finish up.

Hmmm, what the heck was my problem? Maybe I need to, ahem, test different closings to see why I do or don't like certain ones. And with whom and when. ;)

I hope you had a lovely day today, and I very much wish for a happy life for you. cause I like you, ya know. :)

That's a good pick-up muffled. There really is that difference in reactions to blocks and all they entail, and I think this comes across in dialogs about blocks and rules and stuff.

And it does make administration a bit more difficult at times. I know that when I was a deputy and I had to PBC or block someone whom I knew was highly likely to feel triggered, intensely upset, etc., I had to sometimes actively put that out of my mind once the decision was made. I didn't have to work so hard mentally about blocking or PBCing someone whom I thought would be highly unlikely to react so strongly. Yet the two folks should receive equal consideration about a block or PBC regardless of how they may or may not react.

At any rate, you pointed out a significant, at least to me, difference in reactions, and it's something to think about.

Thanks,

gg

Keeping in mind that the idea here is not to post anything that could lead others to feel accused or put down, could you please rephrase that?

But please don't take this personally, this doesn't mean I don't like you or think you're a bad person.

If you or others have questions about this or about posting policies in general, or are interested in alternative ways of expressing yourself, please first see the FAQ:

Follow-ups regarding these issues, as well as replies to the above post, should of course themselves be civil.
