As far as suicide posts, I just skip them. I used to jump right in to try my best to reason with the person. For some reason, I just don't want to deal with the subject anymore. I think most people know that they should get real life help instead of scaring the daylights out of other posters, but that's not my call.
As far as what board they should be posted on, I don't have an opinion.

Hmmm...just wondering why it seems they would "fit" better there?
"It focuses on psychology and psychotherapy: different theoretical orientations and techniques, the therapy process, transference and countertransference, how to find a therapist, etc."
Does SI and any discussion of suicide in general seem to sort of fall under the general area of "psychology?" That's the only loose connection I can make. Because sometimws posters either aren't in therapy and/or don't post about it in relation to their therapists or therapy.
Seems like when I think about it, I do keep coming right back to Social as it ends up as the "catch-all" board. Is it maybe more that we wishfully-think Social could be mostly for light-hearted things (even though we know that's not the case)?
Just thinking out loud - doesn't make a big difference to me personally which board. Just wondering at others' thoughts...maybe I ought to go do something more productive now...

I don't read them either. If I do read one, I quickly regret it and remember why it's better for me not to read them. I'd like it if they were off on their own board and I could never visit. But not Psychology-- some new board I'd never visit. How about Social Dark?

I've hurt people too many times with my dark posts. Sometimes I just feel like I need to get them out and other times I just do it without thinking.
Right now Social is the only place where those posts go. I don't want to hurt more people.
I think it would be a good idea to posts dark posts on a new board. People who are prepared to deal with them can visit this board.
People who are too easily triggered can stay away from it. It is possible that people who are triggered can end up posting unsupportive things because they are hurt.
I think it would benefit the community and individual posters to have a new board for dark subjects.
I support the creation of Dark Social.

I’m not entirely convinced that psychology is the obvious place for posts about SI and suicide. Of course there are some posts on psychology about suicidal feelings, but those posts are usually contextualised by issues relevant to the concerns of the psychology board. But I’m also not sure that a new board for suicidal posts is the answer. I imagine that a board especially for suicidal posts would become unmanageable. I doubt people would read there unless they were feeling suicidal or prone to self injury, and I imagine that it’s difficult for a group of suicidal people to help each other. But what do I know?
Social is apparently for ‘general support’ and I don’t see why people shouldn’t discuss suicidal feelings there, especially if they’re looking for general support rather than psychology-related support. I know it can be hard to ignore those posts, but I think people who don’t want to read them do have the choice of not clicking on the links.
Maybe a better idea would be to have a happy fluffy board where only fun stuff is allowed. I think someone suggested that before…

I agree. Overall, I think...there are almost too many boards now. Like Babble is close to or at a saturation point with the number of boards. But, if another one were to be created, the "happy, fluffy" concept sounds best, and then just leave suicidal posts on social. At least, it's the best idea I've heard so far.
I just can't grasp the concept of a Dark Social, or anything like it. I do appreciate Deneb's very sincere concern for others, though.
I've thought about it a bit more and really can't see a reason those type posts *should* be on psychology exclusively, except as now, when they just naturally come up within the context of something else...oh, Tamar, you said it better...what you said! ;-)

personally...
i don't have a problem with people posting about any of the above topics on any of the boards - so long as they warn people in the heading that that their post is going to be talking about these things.
it is up to us whether we open the posts
whether we follow the thread or not.if people find certain topics triggering then so long as they are warned in the subject header then they can make an informed decision as to whether they want to read the posts to that thread or not.
and if people find particular posters thoughts on certain topics particularly triggering then one can make an informed decision to avoid posts on triggering topics... while still reading posts from that poster that are not on that topic.
it would be a shame...
if people were prevented from expressing themselves / their thoughts / their concerns / their questions etc (even when civil) because of responses / reactions from others.one of the things i find so beneficial about the boards is that i can be honest about that kind of stuff...
and that i can talk about it
and vent about itand i'd hate for anybody to be silenced...

Dr. Bob,
I don't think that "Dark Social" is a good idea. If, over many weeks or months, a poster persists with threats of suicide and repeatedly ignores suggestions, pleas, and exhortations for her to seek appropriate professional help, then what do you suggest? Psychobabble is not a therapy board, and, more important, Psychobabble is not a substitute for psychiatric treatment. The vast majority of posters here are not trained in psychiatry, psychology or social work, and for those who are trained (or are being trained), it would be misguided, unethical and probably illegal for them to practice therapy -- or play therapist -- on this board.
There have been several instances over the past few years when I thought it would be a good idea for you to prohibit certain people from posting here unless they agree to be in intensive psychiatric treatment simultaneously. It is clear that some people don't get better here. It is also apparent that some people get worse. Others just don't seem to understand what this board is about, even when they have been reminded over and over and over again. And I get the feeling that there are a couple of others that probably do know what this board is about, but they seem to get something out of repeatedly testing the limits and toying with others' vulnerabilities.
I would also like to suggest another Psychobabble board or link that would connect Babblers to Internet links and further information about the highest rated hospitals and doctors in their region. For example, if a poster lives in a certain state or province and is not availing herself of the quality of care or the frequency of care that she requires, then she could be directed to links for the best doctors and hospitals in that part of the country. What do you think?

I think Dr-Bob.org is about Support and Education, based via an online internet forum whereby members can join (after going through the signing up process) and are able to post with a view of educating and supporting each other under a general psychiatric based setting.
The responsiblites of each poster to one another is to be civil, if their not, the deputies and/or Dr Bob will ask them to be civil or block the poster(s) for up to a period of 1 year.
In the case of suicide, if posters choose to respond to a suicidal poster, then again that is their respnsiblity and at the same time it is the responsiblity of the suicidal poster who chooses to post their thoughts on an internet forum via a computer.
Maybe the social board in some instances isn't the most ideal place to be discussing suicide, mainly because for the best outcome of the members of the board, and more importantly the suicidal person - Social services would be better suited, in certain circumstances. From there perhaps the person would be redirected to a medical facility whereby their would be *medications* available, a department for *psychology* and substance abuse, book reading therapy etc..
This is in real life in a psychiatric hosptial where suicidal individuals are placed in the most approiate care, whereby real doctors, nurses and health professionals are responsible for the care of the patient.
Here there are such *baords* or internet based windows whereby you can type and view text, but they are not real world, they're virtual cyber based posting internet forums. People here are not responsible for the care of a suicidal individual.
On the other hand, the social board could possibly be used as a starting point for someone to get them to the soical services for the real life help they need.
I would imagine Dr Bob as a health professional has first hand experienced dealing with suicide as he is an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry. I would also imagine he has possibly had responsiblity for the care of patients who are suicidal.
However, Dr Bob's responsiblity of this website is an Administrator. He is responsible for the admistration of each board. From what I understand he is not responsible for anyones medical care here, be it if they are suffering un-wanted side effects from medication to suicidal idealation.
Deneb's posts from what I gather from previous posts, thinks about Dr Bob quite alot, and from what has happened with her posting on social, which she is responsible for, has the results of gaining Dr Bobs attention to the extream, because of the nature of the posts could be viewed as suicide notes in some ways and so being of the very delicate matter it is, Dr Bob has to Administrate this accordingly.
I also understand from the thread on social that Deneb is crying for many hours whilst missing school and staying at home, sleeping till 3pm. Hopefully her parents will be aware of how she is feeling, hopefully her parents will pick up on this and she will recieve the appropriate help.
Kind regards
Nick

This is addressed in the FAQ, see:

> I would also like to suggest another Psychobabble board or link that would connect Babblers to Internet links and further information about the highest rated hospitals and doctors in their region.
Something like that came up before, see:

Sorry about not being around more!
