I don't know the poster or the poster's history at Babble, but I can not understand the block at all. The poster used an "I" statement in making their point. And, I do not see anything objectionable in the statement the poster made - it was an opinion. If such an opinion had been made in response to a post I had made or following a discussion I had been involved in, I would not have felt put down or accused in the least.
I am sorry Dr. Bob, but I think you have made a mistake here. If anything, IMO the poster should only have received a "please be civil".

It's true that the word "I" prefaced the rest of the sentence, but the rest of the sentence went on to say something about others' behavior.
Perhaps pax could have said "I am troubled by ..." That leaves the reaction to the behavior in pax's self and does not include an overt assessment of the others' behavior.
> I do not see anything objectionable in the statement the poster made - it was an opinion. If such an opinion had been made in response to a post I had made or following a discussion I had been involved in, I would not have felt put down or accused in the least.
Opinions are tricky. You might not feel put down, but someone else might. Now if someone posted "I think GG is a geek", I would not feel put down, because I AM a geek. :) But if someone posted that even as their opinion of me, it could be viewed as unflattering.

It really seems like this poster was on Dr. Bob's radar and was given none of the benefit that most posters here have. I just don't understand why he/she wasn't given a PBC or a chance to rephrase.K

I am unabashed about this point...
Lengthy blocks are punishment...
Punishment is for children...
Adults work much better if they are given the ability to amend their performances and go onward...
The 'muddy water' comes into play when society is reluctant to identify (e.g.) a 40 year old as not having feelings/behaviors/motives of an adult, ergo they have migrated into the body of an adult while still performing like a child...
When society 'steps up to the plate' and responsibly considers that childhood motives/behaviors/feelings in adulthood will no longer be tolerated, then true adults can stop being punished and be given the chance to amend their bad performances..... and continue their adulthood with dignity, along with acceptance from society....
Dr-Bob has an opportunity to be a pioneer by allowing us to amend our posting mistakes and stop his punishing us like we are his children!

I hope they come back again...

Surely the post parvox was replying to had someone directly explaining how to abuse an OTC drug?
THAT is against the rules in my understandiing of them.. Dr Bob has agreed many many times that it is irresponsible to tell someone best ways of drug abuse.. And explaining to someone how to get high by drinking something that is designed to be inhaled is surely breaking all those rules?
Sorry.. back off on my break..

They should automatically be set back to 'please refrase' PBC, one week block, etc. They should be given every opportunity to start anew,
(unless their first post is blatantly offensive.)

to prove themselves, and demonstrate that they can adhere, to the best of their ability, to the rules. There is such a thing as redemption.
Obviously the poster was not intentionally trying to be provocative or abusive, and, in light of their post on Social, appeared to be ready to abide the civility guidelines.
http://www.dr-bob.org/babble/social/20050525/msgs/503432.html
I am sure that moderating this site can be a challenge at times. However, I think that one of the challenges of instilling an atomosphere of civility and decorum and exercising discipline, where necessary, is to not always resort to sending the offender to the corner, but rather to take the time to educate posters so that they can learn from their mistakes and modify their posting behaviour accordingly.

All, you sorta make my point about Dr-Bob treating us as children instead of treating us as the adults that we are... If Dr-Bob is really deep down cinical that everyone here are acting like children, he needs to update his frame of referense... I personally have worked toooo hard to eliminate my childhood motives/feelings/behaviors so I can now manage my life as the adult I am...
I hope I am not alone in seeing Dr-Bob's intransigence on this point... Dr-Bob may be toooo arrogant to make this simple change... If he does make the change, punishment will be the exception instead of the rule(s) as it is today... We'll see....
Dr-Bob is allowed to run his site any way he wants... I am pointing out how unnecessary this denial behavior is on Dr-Bob's part.... He otherwise does such a great job here at Babble.....

You wrote,[...should be given...opportunity to start anew...].
Have you looked at the {past practice} in relation to others that have returned from expulsions and if they were afforded an opportunity to start anew?

...a modification to your post, Rod?
In keeping with the guidelines of Babble, it appears this part is outside of them:>>>Dr-Bob may be toooo arrogant to make this simple change...<<<
I think, for me anyway,
And I imagine for most people (?)
If you and I were hoping to have a dialog
And you suggested I might be, "too arrogant to make this simple change," you could pretty much assume I'd feel fairly offended, put down, etc. That word just doesn't usually find its way into a calm and respectful exchange, you know? That's why I'm sure you were just caught up in the heat of the moment in writing your reply. I really do applaud your passion and the way you stick to what you believe.
I read your threads and learn a lot. I was glad to see you back after a lengthy absence, not of your choosing, if I recall. :-( That's why I want to keep you as a participant in this discussion and many others as long as possible....
So, perhaps you'd like to strike that part, or rephrase it?
Perhaps you meant Dr. Bob may have deeply held convictions or reasons re: length and timing of blocks in certain cases, and therefore won't be willing to make this sort of change. And that if so, his position is extrememly difficult for you to understand?

Hi Lou,
I should have re-read my post before I submitted and confirmed. I see that I was a bit categoric in the way I phrased that sentence. I can not say that I have any evidence, or that searched for any evidence before submitting that post, which would confirm that past practice shows that (the assertion I had made). I retract the "always" in the sentence in question.

I don't usually get involved in these discussions, but after reading the Thread it seems to me that his response was a natural one to a person who seemed to be promoting abusing a med. And that person immediately posts to explain that this was not his intention. I don't think it's fair either. Fondly, Phillipa
