I've suffered with anhedonia for the past 8 years. I would like to know what medications have been helpful to anyone for treating anhedonia symptoms specifically. ex. apathy, lack of emotion, loss of sexual interest.. Below are the medications I have taken with minimal success so far. Any information would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Shane S.All of the SSRI's

Which of these helped most?Nardil might be your best choice. It can produce anorgasmia initially, but it often disappears after a few months. I have never found the special diet that must be followed to be overly restrictive. Just be careful not to mix Nardil with any serotonergic drugs (SSRIs, Effexor, Anafranil, Serzone, etc.)

Firstly I am so sorry to hear about your condition. I suffered similar symptoms and had little relief in terms of anhedonia . My pdoc was very keen on parnate- I wasnt. so i was tried on a drug comination of high dose effexor plus wellbutrin and lamactil. This combination took years to 'find'.
Have you been tried some comibinational therapy?
It is very frustrating I can understand- sometimes you feel you are untreatable. What about going to a doc that is an expert in psychopharmacology. These types of docs are experts at drug mixing- and they dont give up easily. My doc is like this.
The others I saw were always conservative and left me in awful states- i didnt feel alive at all.
I really hope you find relief
goodluck

Excuse my ignorance but can anhedonia be a symptom of another disorder like cylothymia?
'Cause I've definitely got all of what you list, and more...

> delnaHi delna,
thanks for your reply. I have tried different combinations of meds. The meds that have been effective at all are Effexor XR and Geodon. Actually Geodon gave me full remission for a brief few days, and for some reason stopped working when I was unfortunately around someone smoking marjiuana. I still take Effexor, which provides very good relief of depression, just not anhedonia. Is the lamictal still working for you? If so, are you able to experience full emotions? Are you on a steady dosage? I like my psy-doc that I have. She does try different combination remedies. She actually asks me what medications I would like to try.

Hi Shane,
You've tried several medications, haven't you? I'm curious, did Provigil help (at least a little) with your anhedonia, apathy, and lack of emotion? What about Selegeline? As you know, both of these meds are dopaminergic and, therefore, I have often wondered if they would treat my atypical depressive symptoms (anhedonia, anergy, low motivation, etc).
Here is a link to a post over on PB-alt that discusses some supplements that you might consider for your problem:

I used Amantadine to counteract the symptoms you describe, inertia etc.
It worked well for improving my alertness, wakefulness, drive/motivation, and went some way toward mitigating a (60mg) prozac induced sexual disinterest and incapability.
Unfortunately, it worsened my depressive symptoms considerably, but, like Wellbutrin for example, many people find it has a sound antidepressant effect.
Worth considering I'd say.Best,
El Jerk.

One suggestion would be to think of which drug helped the most, and try it at a higher dose. For example, if you tried Prozac at 40 mg with limited success, try it at 60 or 80. Some people do well on 100mg or more of Prozac.
I think that a lot of people give up on a drug too soon without raising the dose.
