Quick Trazadone question

Posted by Michele on April 14, 2001, at 15:54:09

Hi everyone,
I have a pretty simple question. Does trazadone have to build up in your system for help in sleeping? Or can I just pop one on a sleepless night? I only have occasional insomnia.
Thanx in advance, Michele

No, it doesn't have to build up in your system.

Michele,
Trazodone will cause sedation after dosing. It doesn't have to build up. However, not everyone is sedated by Trazodone. I for example found it actually ruined my sleep, gave me headaches and nightmares, and was just horrible. Not to mention that hangover feeling in the morning. Yuck.

For occassional insomnia, I think Xanax is much better in a lot of ways. It's smoother and has much less hangover. There is no addiction if used as needed instead of all the time.

If a sedating antidepressant is desired for sleep, I much prefer Remeron to Trazodone. It just feels a lot cleaner and the slight morning hangover goes away much faster. With Remeron all that is needed is 2.5mg to 7.5mg, accomplished by cutting or breaking the pill into smaller chunks. Of course, that's just my preference. Some other people prefer Trazodone.

The best ever for good sleep, in my own trials, is Zyprexa. It doesn't knock me out as fast as Remeron, Xanax, or Trazodone, but after I fall asleep the quality of sleep is very good. Sometimes the quality of sleep on Trazodone or Remeron is not very good.

John,
Thanks for the warning.. I asked about trazadone because I have a script I could refill.... took it last year... altho I have been thru so much since then, I can't remember the effect it had on me. Pathetic. I would prefer a good quality sleep/without feeling hungover... that's for sure.
I have some xanax on hand too... never really thought of that. I think I'll give that a try tonight. Tried Valium last night... Fell asleep about 6 am... woke about 9:30..
What is Zyprexa? Is that an AD? Again.... thanks for the advice, and being specific... Michele

Zyprexa is an antipsychotic. Don't let the word antipsychotic scare you. To me Zyprexa is actually considerably milder than antidepressants, and yet far more effective in producing a well rounded response. Remeron is a norepinephrine and serotonin antagonist. Zyprexa is a dopamine and serotonin antagonist. On paper it is very similar to antidepressants. You need not be psychotic or schizophrenic to do well with Zyprexa.

I like your idea of trying the Xanax. Hopefully you will like it. If not though, you might want to keep Zyprexa in mind.
