Trazodone will cause sedation after dosing. It doesn't have to build up. However, not everyone is sedated by Trazodone. I for example found it actually ruined my sleep, gave me headaches and nightmares, and was just horrible. Not to mention that hangover feeling in the morning. Yuck. For occassional insomnia, I think Xanax is much better in a lot of ways. It's smoother and has much less hangover. There is no addiction if used as needed instead of all the time.
If a sedating antidepressant is desired for sleep, I much prefer Remeron to Trazodone. It just feels a lot cleaner and the slight morning hangover goes away much faster. With Remeron all that is needed is 2.5mg to 7.5mg, accomplished by cutting or breaking the pill into smaller chunks. Of course, that's just my preference. Some other people prefer Trazodone.
The best ever for good sleep, in my own trials, is Zyprexa. It doesn't knock me out as fast as Remeron, Xanax, or Trazodone, but after I fall asleep the quality of sleep is very good. Sometimes the quality of sleep on Trazodone or Remeron is not very good.
