Please remember that EVERY SRI has been observed to produce intense withdrawal syndromes. Effexor is not unique. Unfortunately, with its short half life, Effexor makes tapering difficult *unless* one is prepared to take small amounts several times a day rather than once a day or skipping days.
Fair reporting to people regarding antidepressants should suggest that the SRI discontinuation syndrome exists for all of the drugs represented in this class.
