Stopping cold-turkey

Posted by SLS on May 24, 2005, at 8:36:53

I'm not absolutely sure about this, but...

Stopping an SSRI, Effexor, or Cymbalta abruptly - "cold turkey" - might shock the brain into producing a withdrawal syndrome that lasts for months. This is a trend that I am beginning to observe in the descriptions of people here. It does not seem to happen when one tapers gradually enough to prevent an intense withdrawal syndrome from appearing in the first place.

My observations and inferences are far from being scientific fact. However, if I'm right, the first thing someone should do if they have discontinued one of these drugs abruptly and developed an intense withdrawal syndrome is to either restart the drug or cross over to another serotonergic agent like Prozac.
