I think opiates can induce a temporary psychosis.
When I was in hospital on rather a lot of morphene I remember hallucinating cockroaches. Not scary or disgusting. Sort of cartoony. I remember they got bigger. Big as rats. Bigger. Big as cats. Big as small dogs... It was about then that I realised I was hallunicating.
I don't think people associate opiates with psychosis the way they associate other things, though. Methamphetamine is notorious, here. People become paranoid or violent. I don't think people commonly become paranoid or violent on opiates. More likely to nod off to sleep...
Different drugs might affect people a bit differently, though. Different people certainly seem attracted to different ones. To me, opiates felt... Depressing. I never felt good on them, the way other people seemed to. I just wanted to nod off to sleep... Which I spend quite a lot of my life wanting to do anyway so... Business as usual. What's the point in that?
On the other hand, I remember the first time I tried MJ and it did not affect me at all. I really didn't feel anything at all. It took a couple times for me to feel it.
But then I distinctly remember an acid trip that was similar. I thought I was given something fake or had been ripped off. Didn't feel anything at all. But then weird hallunicatory things if I stared at just one spot. It was a weird visual trip with no emotional component. Odd.
I only tried heroin twice or maybe three times in my life. I... Didn't get it. I don't suppose that is a bad thing.
