I thought it was a tad too melodramatic. All the sadness felt manipulative to me. Also, the New Yorker review said something really funny. They were writing about how Valjean and the gendarme (can't remember his name -- the Russell Crowe character) kept bumping into one another. They said you'd think the entire population of France was only 27 people.
